her calling in the trauma center. It
combines her " three loves: science,
adrenaline, and compassion for my

fellow man. " Nursing, however,
can be extremely stressful.
Because of that, Phelps is a firm
believer in self-care, which she
learned by watching trauma take
a toll on her grandfather, who
served in the U.S. Navy and then
as a nurse in adult critical care.

two from a Japanese
orphanage by
American parents,
Gabriel Toepel (born
Tateshi Sakurai) was part
of a military airlift in the 1990s.
Half Japanese and half Kenyan, he was
dropped off at Aikeikai Baby Home in Tokyo
and subsequently adopted by the Toepels.
Despite living in the U.S. for most of his
childhood and after graduating from high
school, he discovered that he was not a U.S.
citizen. So, he enlisted in the military and was
granted U.S. citizenship upon
completion of basic military
