Sarah Anderson (PharmD ’07) is a clinical pharmacy specialist in adult internal medicine at the Gipson Eastside Family Health Center, one of the Denver Health Community Health Clinics. Her areas of interest include type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, immunizations, and herbal pharmacotherapy. Dr. Anderson received her PharmD from the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy in 2007 and completed her post-graduate residency training at Denver Health Medical Center (PGY1 Pharmacy Practice) and the University of Colorado (PGY2 Family Medicine/Ambulatory Care).
Edgar L. Connell (BS ’53) of Payson and Mesa, Ariz., passed away at his Mesa home Nov. 18. He was 78 years old. Connell is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janet (formerly Anderson, BS ’55), daughter Andrea (BS Business ’80, MBS ’87) and son, Edgar II (BS Pharmacy ’83) – all CU graduates – and two granddaughters Vicky and Angela Connell. Jack Emmanuel Sassone (BS ’54) of Metairie, La., passed away Jan. 24 at the age of 84. Born in Osyka, Miss., Mr. Sassone was an alumnus of Loyola University of the South and the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy. He served as guest lecturer at Xavier University School of Pharmacy and the Louisiana State School of Dentistry. NTPD Graduate in Forbes.com
Dr. Amir Emamifar, a spring 2009 NTPD graduate, was recently interviewed by Forbes.com for an article about medication errors and how technology and medication dispensing robots are helping to cut these errors.
John Shell (BS ’53) of Hillsborough, Calif., friend of the school, scientist, philanthropist, inventor, entrepreneur, and humanitarian, passed away March 30 at the age of 84. After a long illness, Dr. Shell passed away peacefully at home with his wife of almost 58 years, Barbara, at his side. Born and raised in Waxahachie, Texas, Dr. Shell graduated high school and attended The College of the Ozarks for one semester and then enlisted in the Naval Aviation Cadet Program. He received his wings just as war was ending and decided to go back to college rather than make the Navy his career. He attended the University of Colorado where he met his wife to be and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. After receiving a BS (’53) and PhD (’54), Dr. Shell built a long and impressive career spanning 46 years working for the Upjohn Company, Allergan Pharmaceuticals, Alza Corporation and Johnson and Johnson. Not content to retire, he founded his own company, DepoMed Inc., based upon his own oral drug delivery system invention. Finally retiring in 2000 as founder emeritus, he took up oil painting as a hobby. His many contributions in the research and development of drug products and drug delivery systems earned him many awards, one of which was the University of Colorado’s highest honor, the University Medal, in recognition of his contributions to biomedical research. Besides his wife, Barbara, he is survived by his son, John N. Shell, his daughter, Suzanne M. Shell, and a nephew, Richard H. Vaughan (Nelda), and their two children, Greg and Katherine. His sister, Julia Vaughan preceded him in death.
