ALUMNI

Sarah Anderson (PharmD ’07) is	a	clinical	pharmacy	specialist	in	adult	internal	medicine	at	the	 Gipson	Eastside	Family	Health	Center,	one	of	the	 Denver	Health	Community	Health	Clinics.	Her	areas	of	interest	include	type	2	diabetes,	cardiovascular	disease,	immunizations,	and	herbal	pharmacotherapy.	Dr.	Anderson	received	her	PharmD	from	 the	University	of	Colorado	School	of	Pharmacy	in	 2007	and	completed	her	post-graduate	residency	 training	at	Denver	Health	Medical	Center	(PGY1	 Pharmacy	Practice)	and	the	University	of	Colorado	 (PGY2	Family	Medicine/Ambulatory	Care).	

Edgar L. Connell (BS ’53) of	Payson	and	Mesa,	 Ariz.,	passed	away	at	his	Mesa	home	Nov.	18.	He	 was	78	years	old.	Connell	is	survived	by	his	wife	 of	54	years,	Janet	(formerly	Anderson,	BS	’55),	 daughter	Andrea	(BS	Business	’80,	MBS	’87)		 and	son,	Edgar II (BS Pharmacy ’83)	–	all	CU	 graduates	–	and	two	granddaughters	Vicky	and		 Angela	Connell.	 Jack Emmanuel Sassone (BS ’54) of	Metairie,	La.,	 passed	away	Jan.	24	at	the	age	of	84.	Born	in	Osyka,	Miss.,	Mr.	Sassone	was	an	alumnus	of	Loyola	 University	of	the	South	and	the	University	of	 Colorado	School	of	Pharmacy.	He	served	as	guest	 lecturer	at	Xavier	University	School	of	Pharmacy	 and	the	Louisiana	State	School	of	Dentistry.	In	 addition	to	being	a	hospital	chief	pharmacist	and	 proprietor	of	a	retail	and	institutional	pharmacy,	 Mr.	Sassone	was	a	member	and	past	president	of	 the	American	Society	of	Consultant	Pharmacists.	 He	is	survived	by	his	loving	wife	of	59	years,	Edith	 Dillenkoffer	Sassone,	son	Dr.	Randy	E.	Sassone	and	 daughter-in-law	Denise	Broussard	Sassone,	son	 Oley	G.	Sassone	and	Sally	Perry,	daughter	Judge	 Martha	E.	Sassone	and	George	A.	Cella,	III,	son	 Joseph	Sassone	and	Stephanie	Larrowe,	and	four	 grandchildren.

New Addition
Tracey Laessig, PharmD ’09, and	his	wife,	Dana,	 welcomed	daughter	Jillian	Marie	to	their	family.	 “Jillian	is	healthy	and	well	natured	and	a	future	 pharmacist.”

Dr. Amir Emamifar, a	spring	2009	NTPD	graduate,	was	recently	interviewed	by	Forbes.com	for	an	 article	about	medication	errors	and	how	technology	and	medication	dispensing	robots	are	helping	 to	cut	these	errors.

John Shell (BS ’53) of	Hillsborough,	Calif.,	friend	 of	the	school,	scientist,	philanthropist,	inventor,	 entrepreneur,	and	humanitarian,	passed	away	 March	30	at	the	age	of	84.	After	a	long	illness,	 Dr.	Shell	passed	away	peacefully	at	home	with	 his	wife	of	almost	58	years,	Barbara,	at	his	side.	 Born	and	raised	in	Waxahachie,	Texas,	Dr.	Shell	 graduated	high	school	and	attended	The	College	 of	the	Ozarks	for	one	semester	and	then	enlisted	 in	the	Naval	Aviation	Cadet	Program.	He	received	 his	wings	just	as	war	was	ending	and	decided	to	 go	back	to	college	rather	than	make	the	Navy	his	 career.	He	attended	the	University	of	Colorado	 where	he	met	his	wife	to	be	and	was	a	member	of	 Sigma	Chi	fraternity.	After	receiving	a	BS	(’53)	and	 PhD	(’54),	Dr.	Shell	built	a	long	and	impressive	 career	spanning	46	years	working	for	the	Upjohn	 Company,	Allergan	Pharmaceuticals,	Alza	Corporation	and	Johnson	and	Johnson.	Not	content	to	 retire,	he	founded	his	own	company,	DepoMed	 Inc.,	based	upon	his	own	oral	drug	delivery	system	 invention.	Finally	retiring	in	2000	as	founder	 emeritus,	he	took	up	oil	painting	as	a	hobby.	His	 many	contributions	in	the	research	and	development	of	drug	products	and	drug	delivery	systems	 earned	him	many	awards,	one	of	which	was	the	 University	of	Colorado’s	highest	honor,	the	University	Medal,	in	recognition	of	his	contributions	to	 biomedical	research.	Besides	his	wife,	Barbara,	he	 is	survived	by	his	son,	John	N.	Shell,	his	daughter,	Suzanne	M.	Shell,	and	a	nephew,	Richard	H.	 Vaughan	(Nelda),	and	their	two	children,	Greg	and	 Katherine.	His	sister,	Julia	Vaughan	preceded	him	 in	death.
