"We were getting a lot of inquiries
from all over the world for the program,"
Dr. Gleason says. ITPD's emphasis on
patient-centered care also advances
the International Pharmaceutical
Federation's goal to expand pharmacy
practice to help address the world's
healthcare needs, she notes.
Elmalik hopes to advance patient
care in Sudan through medication
therapy management clinics, immunizations provided through community
pharmacies, and helping educate young
pharmacists. He says the program has
taught him to be a better pharmacist.
"The learning experience from
distinguished faculty members and
state-of-the-art facilities provided by
the school are just amazing," Elmalik
says. "Definitely, the program is beyond
my expectations!"
Shible agreed that the program exceeded expectations and had excellent
instruction. He was very impressed by
his APPE rotations. "These rotations
were with faculty members (because I
thought) that these are the kind of preceptors who likely would teach me the
most during the rotation," Shible says.
He plans to expand patient-centered care
in Egypt through teaching and research.
Bashir also found her APPE rotations
very valuable. "They facilitate applying
what I have learned and make the picture
clearer to expand patient-centered care
(in Sudan). I already have started transferring what I am learning here to other
Sudanese pharmacists," she says.
student completing her third year at
CU Pharmacy. Garone first took Dr.
Nuffer's IHM elective and wanted to
learn more.
"The world is changing so much.
More and more people are using
natural medicines. ... I wanted more
information," she says.
So did certificate recipient Brianna
Zerr, PharmD, a clinical pharmacist
at Craig Hospital, which specializes
in rehabilitation of brain and spinal
cord injuries.
"I have patients, as well as my family,
asking all the time" about IHM, Dr.
Zerr says. She says she now is better
prepared to answer those questions and
also is able to recommend mind-body
modalities, such as aromatherapy or
massage, to Craig patients.
Dr. Zerr recommends the IHM
certificate for all pharmacists. "This
could benefit any pharmacist, no matter
where they practice. I think it's valuable
to pharmacists across the board," she says.
The IHM certificate recipients are:
* Ngozi Azu, PharmD
* Irene Croswell, PharmD
* Tracey Garone, P3
* Ashley Howard, PharmD
* Jennifer Langer, PharmD
* Kenneth Orr, P3
* Marci Stovall, P3
* Brianna Zerr, PharmD

Office Mourns
Loss of Student
Karen Barnes
T
he Skaggs School of Pharmacy
and Pharmaceutical Sciences
received the sad news this
semester that Karen Barnes,
a student with the Distance
Degrees and Programs department, died
Jan. 26.
Barnes, who started with CU Pharmacy
in January 2015, was nearing the end of
her didactic coursework in the North
American Trained PharmD program, with
just two courses remaining. After that,
she was on track to complete rotations.
Dr. Shaun Gleason, the school's director of Distance Degrees and Programs,
said Barnes was always smiling, even
when class became stressful.
"I always remember her as being
cheerful and upbeat," she said. "She always looked at the bright side."
A resident of Delaware, Barnes was
a practicing pharmacist employed with
Walgreens, according to an obituary
posted online. She was born Aug. 12,
1960 to Thomas Jenkins and Beverly
Cooper in Wilmington, Delaware.
Barnes leaves behind her husband
Linford Barnes, siblings, nieces, nephews
and other relatives and friends, according to the obituary.
