TRIBAL CULTURES SCENIC UTAH
ANCIENT SITES, ROCK ART PANELS, AND MUSEUMS
“ We walk in our moccasins upon the Earth And beneath the sky As we travel on life's path of beauty We will live a good life and reach old age.” – NAVAJO BLESSING

Across UTAH, many sites like ancient stone dwellings and rock art sites have been stabilized, preserved, and interpreted for the enrichment and education of present and future generations. The locations included below represent merely a cross-section of these accessible sites. Central Utah’s Nine Mile Canyon is an outdoor museum east of Price off US 6, it features canyon walls full of countless petroglyph and pictograph panels. Range Creek Wildlife Management Area, southwest of Price, shelters pristine Fremont Indian rock art and ruins among the rugged Book Cliffs. It is considered one of the most significant archaeological finds in the US in the last 50 years. Range Creek is open to limited public visitation; permits are required. Fremont Indian State Park and Museum, west of Richfield, has a collection of Fremont Indian artifacts from nearby Five Fingers Mesa. In Southeastern Utah, cliff dwellings and kiva ruins may be found in areas like Hovenweep National Monument, Edge of the Cedars State Park, and Cedar Mesa. Newspaper Rock is one of the finest examples of rock art in the Southwest. This stone “bulletin board” has over 350 distinct petroglyphs carved by the ancients more than 800 years ago. Monument Valley, an iconic symbol of the American West, is the sacred heart of the Navajo Nation.
UTAH IS HOME TO FIVE DISTINCT AMERICAN INDIAN CULTURES,
each with a unique heritage that can be found among the state’s many sacred places, dwelling sites, rock art locations, and museum exhibits. UTAH is named after the Ute Indians. It is a derivative that evolved from the first Spanish reference to them as Quasuatas, a form of the word “Yutas.” Today, Utah’s Shoshone, Goshute, Ute, Paiute, and Navajo (Diné) people continue to thrive on the lands of their ancestors. Contact the Utah State Division of Indian Affairs at (801) 538-8808 for more information, or visit www.indian.utah.gov - that includes information on tribes, an events calendar, and additional resource links.
