Although Denver International Airport
(DEN) remains the country's youngest commercial
airport, no one could have predicted
its incredible growth to third busiest in the
U.S. and eighth busiest in the world (based
on number of passengers) by 2021 or how
security and technology would fundamentally
change the aviation industry over the
last two decades. Numerous improvements
are underway to address both growth and
security and to elevate the overall traveler
experience.
Great Hall
The Great Hall, located beneath DEN's
iconic tented roof, and Jeppesen Terminal
in its entirety needed updating for today's
aviation needs. Jeppesen Terminal was originally
designed to accommodate 50 million
passengers, but DEN is expected to serve
approximately 70 million passengers in 2022
and reach 100 million passengers in approximately
10 years.
Phase 1 was completed in October 2021, and
Phase 2 is currently underway, taking care
that passenger disruption is as minimal as

make the screening security process more
efficient; the check-in process quicker with
more flexible and open airline check-in
space and new ticketing kiosks and 86 selfdrop
units; and the operational efficiencies
improved with things like additional and
updated restrooms.
Gate Expansion
Phase 1 of DEN's gate expansion program
will build 39 new gates,
increasing gate
capacity at the airport by 30 percent. The
first four new gates opened on the west side
of Concourse B in November 2020, and all
expansion areas on the three concourses are
expected to be operational in 2022.
In addition to increasing overall airport
capacity, this project delivers more passenger
amenities including dining and shopping
options, restrooms, a variety of comfortable
seating choices, charging stations and outdoor
decks with mountain views and places
to lounge around fire pits. Behind the scenes,
ground loading facilities are being replaced
and airline support space like offices and
baggage handling areas added. The project
will allow current airlines serving DEN to
expand and new airlines to extend travel
options for passengers.

Happenings
BENSON HOTEL AND
FACULTY CLUB
A new 106-room luxury hotel, Benson Hotel and
Faculty Club, is under construction at Fitzsimons
Innovation Community in Aurora and slated for completion
in 2023. The property is part of a collective
vision for the CU Anschutz Medical Campus. Plans
include a ballroom, multiple meeting rooms, and
event space, as well as a rose garden with outdoor
seating, lawn for tented events, and full-service bar
and restaurant. The Faculty Club within the hotel is
for the medical, educational, and research staff on
campus with amenities such as a central bar, conversational
spaces, and indoor/outdoor terrace.

Located only seven minutes from the airport
via a free shuttle, DoubleTree by Hilton Denver
International Airport opened in August 2020. Groups
will find nearly 5,000 square feet of meeting and
event space at this property and warm chocolate
chip cookies upon checking in. There is a 24-hour
fitness center for attendees who like to work out
while traveling, and Tower Tap and Grill features a
full bar and tasty menu items like burgers, wings,
salads, and hearty entrées.
