Providing a place for sharing knowledge,
community, and artistic ingenuity has
been at the heart of the historic building
located at 9901 E. 16th Ave., once
serving as the neighborhood library
and now as Red Delicious Press, a
fine art printmaking facility and artist
cooperative. Artist Elaine Scheffler, Red
Delicious Press's founder, had a vision for
the artist cooperative and worked with
the Aurora Historical Society and the City
of Aurora in 2008 to get the 1953 building
renovated and back in use.
Today, co-op members pay a monthly
fee to participate in a wide range of fine
art printmaking disciplines, including
intaglio, monotype, screen printing,
relief, and more by utilizing the space
and equipment. Plus, there are three or
four exhibitions a year and events like
Under PRESSure: Weekend Printmaking
Challenge held last summer and BIG
INK, a host of large-scale woodblock
printmaking events across the U.S.
The Red Delicious Press name comes
from the organization's large-format
press that is capable of producing 4' x 10'

Artist Spotlight
Michael Keyes,
a painter and woodcut printmaker, received his BFA from Wright State University
in Dayton, Ohio, and MFA from Ohio State University in Columbus. After retiring
as a trade school instructor 10 years ago, Keyes and his wife moved from Ohio
to Aurora to be close to their son. He relished having more time for woodcut
printmaking and discovered Red Delicious Press only a mile from their home.
" Working at Red Delicious Press has accelerated, as well as made enjoyable, the
woodcut printmaking process for me. The facility, consisting of reliable relief and
etching presses and workspace for designing images, cutting and tearing paper to
size, mixing inks, and drying works, has streamlined an otherwise complex and
daunting task, " Keyes says.
Members come and go as they please and represent a wide variety of age groups,
including recent graduates of Metro State University of Denver and University of
Denver. " It's phenomenal to have a full working print shop available to artists for a
reasonable monthly member price and have all the facilities to make fine art prints.
It's very rare to have that opportunity outside of a university, " Keyes says. " I feel
very fortunate. "
