Major improvements are
boosting options and
experiences at the world's
third busiest airport.
Based on total passenger traffic, Denver
International Airport (DEN) is the thirdbusiest
airport in the United States and
the world in 2021, according to the latest
information available from Airports Council
International. Representing the facility's
highest-ever global ranking. DEN also
ranked as the largest airport for Frontier,
Southwest, and United flights.
What does this mean for business and
leisure travelers? The steady flow of
passengers and the airport's Gate Expansion
Program has translated into more flights
from around the globe, making Colorado one
of the most accessible destinations. Here's a
look at what's happening at DEN.
Gate Expansion Program
At the end of 2022, the airport wrapped up
the addition of 39 gates across all three
concourses, increasing gate capacity by 30%.
The project also delivered more passenger
amenities such as dining and shopping
options, restrooms, a variety of comfortable
seating choices, charging stations, and
outdoor decks with mountain views and firepit
seating. Behind the scenes, ground loading
facilities were replaced, and airline support
spaces like offices and baggage handling
areas were added. The project is allowing
current airlines serving DEN to
expand and new airlines to
extend travel options for
passengers.
DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Great Hall
The Great Hall, located beneath DEN's
iconic tented roof, and Jeppesen Terminal
needed updating for today's aviation needs.
Jeppesen Terminal was initially designed
to accommodate 50 million passengers,
but DEN is expected to reach 70 million in
2022 and 100 million in less than a decade.
No one could have predicted the airport's
rapid growth to the third busiest in the
world or how security and technology would
fundamentally change the aviation industry.
Numerous improvements are underway
to address both growth and security
and to elevate the overall traveler
experience. Great Hall improvements
are changing safety and security
spaces to make the screening
process more efficient;
providing quicker check-in
with more flexible and
open airline check-in space featuring new
ticketing kiosks and 86 self-bag drop units;
and improving amenities such as updated
restrooms and comfortable spaces to meet
and greet travelers.
Sustainability
One of DEN's major goals is to become
one of the greenest airports in the world.
The new additions are projected to use 30
percent less energy than a typical airport
building. Two new solar projects will
generate approximately 36 million kilowatthours
of electricity annually, equivalent to
the electricity consumption of almost 6,000
Denver residences. DEN constructed its
first solar array in 2008, and after the new
installations will have solar panels spread
across more than 140 acres of land.
