RANKINGS DEFINITIONS
OVERALL SCORE: Overall score represents the combined score of our three metrics-social mobility, research, and service-with each
metric being weighted equally.
SOCIAL MOBILITY: The first column ranks the college by the percentage of all students graduating within eight years, and the second
column ranks based on the predicted rate of graduation (based on incoming ACT/SAT scores, Pell Grant percentages, and other measures;
see our full methodology on page 104). The third column ranks colleges based on the difference in six-year graduation rates between Pell
Grant recipients and those who did not receive a Pell Grant. The fourth column lists the number of Pell Grant recipients who graduated with
a bachelor's degree. The fifth column ranks the difference between the actual and predicted percentages of Pell Grant recipients based on
ACT/SAT scores, the percentage of students admitted, and the state's family income distribution. The sixth column ranks colleges based
on their former students' versus predicted earnings 10 years after college entry. The seventh column lists the net price of attending that
institution, or the average price that first-time, full-time students who have a family income below $75,000 per year and receive financial aid
pay for college after subtracting grants and scholarships. The eighth column ranks institutions by net price.
RESEARCH: The first column ranks total research expenditures. The second shows the college's ranking in the number of bachelor's
recipients who go on to receive PhDs, relative to college size. In the National Rankings only: The third column ranks the college by the
number of science and engineering PhDs awarded; the fourth column shows the college's ranking by the number of faculty receiving
prestigious awards and the number of faculty who are members of the National Academies, relative to the number of full-time faculty.
SERVICE: The first column ranks the college by the number of alumni who go on to serve in the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps, relative to
college size, as well as whether colleges match Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards. The second column ranks the college by the percentage
of students who serve in ROTC. The third is the percentage of funds in federal work-study money that go to community service (versus noncommunity
service). The fourth category indicates whether the school received the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, which
is a measure of community involvement. The fifth category includes measures of a college's voting engagement, and colleges can score
between zero and six points in this category. The final category is the share of degrees awarded in health, education, and social work majors.
