Motion Control
Motion Controller for Precision Linear
Positioners and Rotation Stages
PI (Physik Instrumente) LP is offering a motion controller for
closed-loop precision positioning systems. The C-884, four-axis
digital servo controller was designed to control motorized linear
translation stages and rotary positioners with very high accuracy
and repeatability. The high-speed encoder interface allows the use
of the latest direct-metrology linear and angular scales with resolutions down to the nanometer and microrad realm and below.
PI’s controller is equipped with a dual-core architecture for
fast servo handling and command interpretation. A wealth of
software tools are provided for ease of operation. The included
PIMikroMove software helps the user to get up to speed quickly,
without the need for writing a single line of code. For programmers PI’s General Command Set (GCS) simplifies the development of custom applications, reducing the risk for errors,
because the commands for all supported PI devices are identical
in syntax and function. Through the use of the GCS command
set with its convenient functions, the orientation phase and application development process is vastly accelerated. The GCS
commands are available at the controller terminal, in macros and
in the form of a universal driver set for LabVIEW (VIs), Windows dynamic link libraries (DLL) and Linux libraries
Other useful functions for programmers and users as well
are the data recorder (real-time recording or motor voltage,
velocity, actual position and position errors, etc.) and the
stand-alone capability, which is made possible by means of a
computer-independent macro programming language that runs
on the controller.
This servo positioning controller supports several motion
profiles, linear vector motion, point-to-point motion. PID parameters can be changed on the fly, the servo update rate is 20 kHz.
Communication is through industry standard TCP/IP, USB and
RS-232 interfaces.
Scalable AKD Servo Drive-Based Solutions
Satisfy Simple Single Axis Control
With the recent additions of the AKD PDMM and AKD
BASIC to its servo drive family, Kollmorgen now has available a complete suite of scalable motion solutions that enable
OEMs to simplify the design, reduce the size and improve the
performance of virtually any machine. Scalable solutions enable
machine designers to leverage a single drive platform to satisfy
unique motion needs, from simple single axis control up to 128

axes of fully programmable and tightly synchronized motion,
across machine designs.
“Each product in the AKD platform fits a specific need in the
machine market, so a machine designer is sure to find a motion
solution that seems tailor-made for the machine architecture.
The result is an optimized solution at COTS pricing with all the
performance that the market has come to expect from Kollmorgen,” said Kevin Liu, product manager of Industrial Automation.
“The flexibility of the AKD platform is also ideal for machine
builders who are looking for a migration path from a traditional
controller to a modern digital motion bus based system. The
AKD platform supports both solutions and leverages the same
configuration software to make the transition even easier.”
AKD Ethernet-based servo drives enable machine builders to standardize on a single drive family with a common
Graphical User Interface (GUI) across the power range (up to
24 Arms continuous and 48 Arms peak). This results in optimized machine performance,
throughput and accuracy
across multiple applications,
while minimizing engineering
time and costs associated with
stocking, understanding and
programming multiple types
of drives. These drives offer
pug-and-play commissioning
for instant and seamless access
to everything in a machine.
AKD servo drives are available
in a wide range of connectivity
and control options including EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP,
CANopen, Profinet as well as Analog and pulse train command
control options.
AKD PDMM combines a high-performance multi-axis
motion controller, complete IEC61131-3 soft PLC, EtherCAT
master, and AKD servo drive in a single, compact package. This
enables OEMs to lower machine costs, reduce panel space by 50
percent or more and simplify wiring and integration, while increasing system flexibility, scalability and motion performance.
AKD PDMM is well suited for applications where precise synchronization of multiple axes of motion is vital, and can reduce
the time required to commission complex systems from weeks
or more to days or even hours.
AKD BASIC incorporates a programmable single-axis motion controller into the existing AKD drive footprint, enabling
OEMs to build a more compact and cost-effective machine by
eliminating the need for a separate PLC. The registration correction, camming, s-curve and free-form motion profile capabilities
delivered by the integrated motion controller, combined with
the simplicity of BASIC programming language and a built-in
Program Editor with debugging tools, enables machine builders
to reduce development time by up to 70 percent and to execute
complex processes, faster than is possible with conventional
servo drive-based options.
