Choosing the Right Power Solutions to Protect IT Infrastructure
Jessica Biggerstaff, Product Manager
Eaton
Power management is a vital consideration for protecting equipment and ensuring information technology (IT) runs
smoothly. It starts with installing the right backup power, power distribution and other power accessories to not only
build a reliable networking environment, but also safeguard your business from costly interruptions caused by everything from electrical outages to human error.
Data center and IT managers can distribute power to and within a rack efficiently in conjunction with today's power
management solutions, as well as cable management accessories, to ensure their equipment is organized and running
well. Combining power management solutions with remote monitoring and management capabilities can also help
make jobs easier for administrators, so they don't have to make trip after trip each time there's an issue with power.
Whether considering solutions for a single network closet setting, or a large data center, there are a variety of
products and services for users to help keep IT systems running efficiently. Using this power management solutions
checklist will go a long way toward helping to create an optimized and efficient IT infrastructure:
Organization
Racks are the first piece of the power management puzzle, but they lay the foundation
for protecting IT equipment so it lasts for years. The accessories users choose for their
rack can help with organization and heat management while ensuring systems are
covered in the event of an outage. There are a variety of options for users to choose
from, depending on their specific network environment and the amount of equipment
they need to support it. Consider the following when determining your own needs:
Two-Post Racks
Two-post racks provide the primary mounting and cabling infrastructure to meet
a variety of application requirements. These durable network equipment racks are
typically available in 19 and 23 inch panel mounts with a variety of widths and sizes.
Eaton's seismic version of this solution also has enhanced frame strength and rigidity
tested to GR-63-Core shock.
Four-Post Racks
These racks offer an open, accessible and unrestricted architecture for cable-dense
networking equipment. The labeled U-spaces assist with hardware deployment, while the open design provides unobstructed airflow into and out of equipment. Users should also consider cable management accessories and provisions for rack power distribution units (PDUs).
Wall-Mount Cabinet
Wall-mount equipment is a cost-effective, secure way to mount communications cabling, networking gear and
related equipment to conserve floor space. Wall-mount cabinets provide a secure enclosure with protection from
tampering and other hazards, while open-frame swing gate wall-mount cabinets offer easy access to and unrestricted
airflow around mounted equipment.
Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Enclosures
From small businesses to government installations - SME preconfigured enclosures provide the perfect solution
for small server, storage and communication environments. Typically, available in 30U and 36U heights, these
preconfigured solutions feature excellent airflow via perforated doors, ease of cabling via cable knockouts and EIA
mounting provisions.
