Feature
Flexibility and Scalability
As more companies shift mission-critical IT systems to virtualized infrastructures, data center professionals face
increasing pressure to consolidate resources and lower costs. Next-generation racks are designed to meet these challenges by providing flexible configurations across a wide range of environments, from small IT closets to multi-tenant
data centers (MTDCs).
New platforms, such as Eaton's RS Enclosure, are designed to support a broad range of accessories needed for an
optimized network closet - including power distribution, management and protection products. With enhanced
flexibility, this solution can help reduce costs while serving as the foundation of a complete data center infrastructure solution.
Protection
Equipment protection and environment design are critical to uptime and efficiency. Proactively choosing the right
management solutions can help users protect power infrastructure, ensuring the design addresses their specific
network needs during a power event. There are a number of reliable and redundant solutions that can be installed
easily to ensure uptime and rack efficiency.
UPS Battery Runtime
In a rack environment where you require more runtime during a power outage, an extended battery module (EBM)
is the best solution to meet service-level agreements. Anywhere from one to four EBMs can be added to an uninterruptible power system (UPS) depending on rating to extend runtime from minutes to hours for VoIP and telephony
services. Eaton's EBMs are designed to pair specifically with our UPSs, ensuring a smooth installation and reliable
backup solution.
Outlet-Level Control
UPS load segments are groups of receptacles that can be controlled independently. They can be used to cycle hung
servers remotely to save time and possibly eliminate the need to dispatch personnel. Load segments also extend
runtime for critical equipment. In the event of a power outage, non-essential equipment can be powered down to
preserve battery power for critical devices.
New managed rack PDUs offer the ability to control power at the outlet level
for individual power cycling of a device.
For further flexibility, administrators can
configure outlets into groups while time
and date event scheduling to perform
unattended control of individual outlets.
This also provides capabilities to measure
current, voltage and power usage at the outlet or device.
Leveraging rack PDUs can also help protect and manage equipment. These products provide the capabilities to distribute power efficiently and safely while taking advantage of the advanced outlet-level control and measurement.
Maximize Reliability and Protection
A 2N or redundant UPS solution is one of the most reliable designs, since equipment is supported by two UPSs.
Power monitoring software can also help to ensure reliability, so in the event one UPS fails the equipment knows it
is supported by another UPS and will not shut down - providing continual protection and time to fix the problem.
Once the primary UPS is back online, the equipment switches back to relying on it.
Maintenance bypass units enhance power availability to the rack and provide an additional level of reliability to a
power distribution design. Utility power runs through the maintenance bypass to the UPS, and then supports the rest
of the equipment in the rack. Should the UPS need to be replaced, users can switch power directly from the maintenance bypass to the equipment, and replace or fix the UPS without having to shut down equipment.
