Adhesive from DELO Optimized for
Bonding Magnets in Electric Motors
KEMET, part of the Yageo Group, has made advancements
in its Flex Suppressor, a thin, flexible noise suppression sheet
designed to reduce electromagnetic interference and other noise
disturbances. Its EFG3 and FS series now operate in a broader
frequency range up to 40GHz, advancing its capabilities in 5Gconnected
devices and electronics for commercial, telecommunications,
and automotive applications.
Made from the company's proprietary EMI-absorbent material,
the sheets help prevent noise-induced impairments, malfunctions,
and total system failure from occurring. The flexible
polymer material houses micron-sized magnetic metal flakes that
absorb unwanted radiated noise and convert it into heat. Not only
does the EFG3 and FS series absorb radiated noise, but they
also prevent quasi-microwave range interference, electrostatic
discharge, and desense in digital TV, 5G, WiFi, and Bluetooth
devices. The series are best suited for portable, connected
devices and equipment that require a compact design, including
mobile phones, digital cameras, and car infotainment systems.
The sheets can be cut into custom shapes for any design. The
product is also available in a flexible tape style and can replace
bulky ferrite cores for noise suppression, allowing for smarter
and more lightweight cable designs. The tape is ideal for charger,
power, and interface cables used with commercial electronic
devices, such as mobile phones and tablets.
Suppressing noise in electronic devices and systems is an
increasing priority for design engineers as the number, proximity,
and connectivity of electronics used grows globally, notes Kemet.
The 2020 Cisco Annual Internet Report (2018-2023) forecasts
that the number of devices connected to IP networks will be

DELO has launched an adhesive with exceptionally high temperature
stability that it developed primarily for the automotive
industry and mechanical engineering applications. The company's
new Monopox HT2999 achieves strengths of 20 MPa
at 180 °C which is four times greater than its predecessor. It is
depicted above in an exploded view of an automobile motor with
the adhesive colored magenta.
High-temperature-resistant adhesives are in particular demand
for electric motors and power electronics. Many products that are
currently on the market show a clear drop in performance at temperatures
above 150 °C. DELO's new structural adhesive can be
used above that temperature.
The performance profile of the new adhesive has been optimized
for bonding magnets in electric motors. For example, the compression
shear strength of bonded magnets (NdFeB) is 20 MPa
at 180 °C, with the bonded joints remaining thermally stable in
the long term. Even after 10,000 hours of storage at 180 °C, they
achieve a temperature stability of 20 MPa. The maximum operating
temperature of electric motors is generally 180 °C since the
powerful rare earth magnets will demagnetize at higher temperatures.
If a certain application requires resistance at higher
temperatures, the adhesive can even be used up to 220 °C.
Electrical insulation is another important property since it minimizes
eddy currents in electric motors, reducing heat development
and increasing motor performance. The new adhesive is
provided with integrated spacers that ensure a uniform and very
thin bonding gap of 50 µm for magnet stacking. This allows the
use of more magnetic material and also contributes to motor
efficiency.
