WirelessHART is achieving widespread global acceptance among end users and suppliers throughout the process automation industry. In just a few short years, WirelessHART has earned international standard status (IEC 62591Ed. 1.0, EN 62591) and has proven its ability to fulfill users’ requirements for simple, reliable and secure wireless communication in thousands of applications working in concert with millions of installed HART devices and systems worldwide. “Enhancing the proven HART Protocol to include wireless communication capabilities greatly shortened the time required for industry acceptance,” said Ron Helson, executive director, HART Communication Foundation. “WirelessHART by design provides the same familiar ease of use and complements the HART instrumentation already installed in users’ plants. Its secure backward compatibility, interoperability and reliability make it easy for both users and suppliers to support wired and wireless devices connected to the same automation systems, operating side-by-side and using the same tools.” The WirelessHART standard supports star, point-to-point and/or mesh topologies and requires no specialized tools or expertise for deployment. The technology is easy to implement, provides built-in reliability in all industrial environments, and employs 128-bit AES encryption, multi-tiered, always-on security to protect the network and the data being transferred at all times. WirelessHART builds on international standards, the HART Communication Protocol (IEC 61158), EDDL (IEC 61804-3), IEEE 802.15.4 radio and frequency/channel hopping, spread spectrum and mesh networking technologies.

Oracle has announced the results of its “Smart Grid Challenges & Choices, Part 2: North American Utility Executives’ Vision and Priorities” research report, which surveyed 152 North American C-level utility executives to understand utilities’ visions for the upcoming decade, how smart grid plans and expectations are evolving and how utilities are communicating these changes to their customers. This report is the second in a series. In March 2010, Oracle Utilities released its first survey of C-level utility executives – “Smart Grid Challenges & Choices: Utility Executives’ Vision for the New Decade.” While 71 percent of utilities say securing customer buy-in is a key step needed to drive the success of smart grid, just 43 percent say they are educating their customers on smart grid’s value proposition. Additionally, threequarters of utilities rely on one-way customer communication via mail and/ or Web sites. Few use social media or other means to in two-way discussion. Utilities that have implemented pilot programs or system-wide smart grid deployments anticipate that just 38 percent of customers will take advantage of energy conservation programs such as smart metering pilot programs, in-home energy management programs, programmable thermostats and incentives for reducing energy loads, once available. Utility executives agree, however, that their top priorities for the next 10 years will be improving service reliability and controlling customer costs.
Customer Buy-In is Key to Smart Grid Success but Less Than Half of Utility Executives are Preparing Customers For Change

Survalent Technology has commissioned six new SCADA systems including advanced Distribution Management (DMS) functionality for CFE Mexico Golfo Norte Division. Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) is a Mexican public corporation and government agency. CFE’s mission is to provide generation, transmission, distribution and commercialization of electric energy for 34.7 million metered customers of Mexico’s population of almost 113 million people, making it one the largest in North America. The new system features Survalent’s dual-redundant, open-architecture system based on Windows Server 2008 R2. The system includes several of Survalent’s open system applications, including WorldView Graphical User Interface, Web Server, Event Data Recorder, IED Wizard, Control Panel, Remote Alarm Annunciation, SNMP, DNP3.0 Level 3, ICCP and SCADA Add-in for MS Excel and Access. In addition to the traditional SCADA applications, CFE Golfo Norte plans required additional advanced DMS functionality, such as network and connectivity import from CFE’s corporate GIS system (SIGED), interface to CFE’s corporate TCS system (SICOSS) automatic vehicle location (AVL) and lightning detection system among others.

Verizon Wireless and ILS Technology Form Strategic Alliance to Support M2M Services
Verizon Wireless has formed a strategic alliance and technology partnership with ILS Technology to use its deviceWISE M2M smart device application platform as a component of Verizon Wireless’ Machine to Machine (M2M) Management Center and other smart service offerings. The deviceWISE M2M Application Platform enables Verizon Wireless to deliver and implement intelligence and connectivity for M2M customer devices. The Verizon Wireless Machine to Machine Management Center enables enterprise customers to connect any Verizon Wireless certified device to back-office, field service applications or infrastructure over the Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband network. Customers can access an integrated dashboard to manage network connections, self-service device management and other essential elements of machine-to-machine connectivity. “Verizon Wireless’ M2M services go beyond connecting machines, people and systems across our wireless networks,” said Janet Schijns, VP, Business Solutions, Verizon Wireless. “They include the ability to collect and distribute key data among devices, back-end applications and mobile personnel. The Verizon Wireless and ILS technology alliance is another tool for enterprise customers to use as they expand their M2M connections.
