Industry News Utilities have still not shaken off the investment torpor brought on by the downturn, but that is set to change with the country’s alarming dependence on other countries for its escalating energy needs. The government is offering several subsidies and incentives such as soft loans, tax benefits and feedin tariffs to attract investors in its energy industry and ensure energy security. New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, North American Electrical Equipment Market for Power Generation, finds that the market earned revenues of $1.16 billion in 2010 and estimates this to increase to $2.16 billion in 2015. “Production tax credits have helped wind power producers to reduce energy rates to less than five cents per kilowatt hour (KWh), making it competitive with conventional power generation,” said Frost & Sullivan Principal Consultant Farah Saeed. “Many states have adopted renewable portfolio standards to encourage investments.” The expected growth in power demand has not only catalyzed the market for renewable power generation, but also compelled utilities to invest in new and conventional electrical equipment and technology to improve the efficiency and reliability of the plant’s operation. “The government is aiming to harness its natural gas, wind and solar energy, thereby reducing dependence on other countries,” said Frost & Sullivan senior research analyst Vignesh Sundaram. “The increasing investments in new natural gas power plants and renewable fuel sources such as wind and solar power generation will boost the need for electrical equipment.” Spectris plc has signed an agreement to acquire the Omega Engineering business. Omega is a supplier of process measurement and control instrumentation across a range of categories, including automation, wireless, test and measurement, process control, power monitoring, environmental and lab equipment. Founded in 1962, Omega has grown steadily and is now an established Need for Energy Security Impels Utilities to Invest in Equipment for Increased Power Generation global leader in the technical marketplace. The company offers over 100,000 state-of-the-art solutions for measurement of temperature, pressure, flow, level, strain, humidity, pH and conductivity, as well as a comprehensive line of data acquisition, electric heating and custom engineered products. Spectris to Acquire Omega Engineering IMS Research’s latest report, “The World Market for CCTV and Video Surveillance Equipment – 2011 Edition”, estimates that the world market for video surveillance equipment continued to achieve strong growth in 2010, in excess of 10 percent on the previous year, despite the persistent after-effects of the global economic downturn. This growth was predominantly driven by sales of network video surveillance equipment. According to Senior Analyst and report author, Gary Wong; “Whilst the global analogue video surveillance equipment market was relatively depressed in 2010, the network video surveillance market has continued grow almost three time as fast as the total market in 2010, over 30 percent. If the Chinese analogu video surveillance equipment market was removed from the equation, both the EMEA and the Americas analogu markets contracted in 2010.” Two key factors impacting the decline of the analogu video surveillance market are the large/enterprise tier of the market transitioning to network video surveillance solutions and increasing price competition/commoditization in the mid-low tier of the analogu surveillance market. Network video surveillance growth continues to be bolstered by the trickle-through effect from government stimulus-funded projects and the increasing penetration of higher value network video surveillance products, such was HD cameras. IMS Research forecasts that the growth of the network video surveillance market and the decline of the analog market will lead to a transition in 2014, with network video overtaking analogue in terms of sales revenue. However, it should be noted that in terms of shipments, analogu cameras are forecast to continue to outsell network cameras in 2014.
