Texas Instruments, Inc. (TI) has introduced its next generation of power management integrated circuits (ICs) for energy harvesting. The efficient boost charger for nano (ultra low) power energy harvesting manages the microwatts to milliwatts of power generated from a number of sources, such as solar, thermoelectric, electromagnetic and vibration, and stores the extracted energy in various storage elements, including Li-ion batteries and super capacitors. The bq25504 also includes circuitry to protect the energy storage element from over voltage and under voltage conditions and to kick-start the system when the battery is deeply discharged. In a solar panel powered device that is operating in indoor light conditions, for example, the new boost charger increases the usable harvested energy by 30 to 70 percent compared to a linear regulator. This efficiency allows designers to reduce the size and the number of solar panels in their designs, thus reducing overall solution cost. The device can benefit wireless sensor networks (WSN) for area, industrial, water/waste and structural monitoring. “Wireless sensor networks have been limited in their penetration due to the cost associated with maintaining and replacing the batteries within sensor nodes,” said Sami Kiriaki, senior vice president over TI’s Power Management business. “With the bq25504 boost charger, the nodes can power autonomously, which can reduce the operating cost and thereby make ultra low-power wireless sensor networks cost-effective in more applications, such as industrial monitoring of hazardous or restricted areas.” The bq25504 features quiescent current, typically 330 nA, and high conversion efficiency of greater than 80 percent. The user-programmable settings allow the boost charger IC to be used in a variety of energy sources and energy storage elements such as different battery chemistries or super capacitors, and a battery OK indicator allows conditional enabling of external loads and protects the storage element.

handling of individual batteries and the associated wiring hassles. For unattended OS shutdown and easy monitoring of the UPS system, Falcon’s UPSilon shutdown and management software supports Windows platforms including Windows 7 and server version 2008 RX, as well as Novell NetWare 5 & 6, LINUX and FreeBSD. For remote management, users may purchase an optional SNMP/HTTP agent board that installs directly inside the UPS and provides a TCP-IP addressable, 10/100 Ethernet communications for remote monitoring and management. C&D Technologies, Inc. has released the Liberty MSE product line, a valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) battery that offers the MSE technology incorporated into a new, global product form factor. This product features the latest battery technology in a space efficient, cost effective package with capacities from 800 to 1,600 ampere-hours. This product utilizes C&D’s MSE low float current technology to ensure long service life and resulting dependable performance. This latest battery technology targets global markets that are searching for a cost effective valve regulated lead acid battery line that can be used in telecommunications, long duration UPS and energy and infrastructure applications. The product utilizes MSE battery technology to optimize footprint, performance, reliability and ease of maintenance in a low cost module that can address the current and emerging needs of the market.

Falcon Electric, Inc. has added Lithium-Ion batteries as an option to its 1,500 VA model of its SSG series industrial grade UPS Plus. Lithium-Ion chemistry offers several advantages over valve regulated leadacid (VRLA) batteries including less weight, longer runtimes and higher energy density. The SSG series is a true doubleconversion on-line sinewave regenerative UPS that is a robust and rugged solution that provides military, aerospace and industrial applications with a high level of power protection. Due to its rugged design, the U.L. listed SSG series is capable of withstanding elevated temperatures of up to 55º C. The SSG series, which is available in 1,500 VA, 2,200 VA and 3,000 VA configurations, can be placed in an equipment rack or installed as a standalone tower in close proximity to the critical load. The SSG’s 10-year rated VRLA batteries, when operated in a typical environment of 21ºC to 23ºC, double the average UPS battery life. When operated in harsher temperature environments at 50ºC, the projected battery life is four years, quadrupling the battery operating life over typical UPSs. The SSG series also provides users with an improved level of battery monitoring and replacement notification, as well as hot-swappable battery packs. Slide-out battery packs are replaced through the UPS front panel, without having to remove the UPS from the equipment rack, eliminating the
