Industry News Machine-to-machine communications technology is saving tens of thousands of infants from mother-to-child HIV infection in Africa. Sequoia Technology, along with its technology partner Telit Wireless Solutions, has developed a way for rural medical clinics in Africa to wirelessly receive HIV test results of expectant mothers within days of testing, a first for many rural villages. This has allowed mothers with HIV-positive results to begin anti-retroviral drugs much earlier in their pregnancies, reducing the chances of transferring the virus to their newborns from 40 percent to less than 1 percent. Nearly half of babies born in Mozambique with HIV die in the first two years of life. Funded by the Clinton Foundation and Mozambique’s Ministry of Health, the HIV Early Infant Diagnosis Project saved an estimated 20,000 babies from infection in the first six months of its launch. The program is now being expanded to nine other African nations including Kenya, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Uganda and others. Sequoia Technology developed a small, inexpensive printer incorporating SMS (short message service) wireless protocol used for mobile phone text messaging. Utilizing the GC864-Quad V2 wireless modules from Telit Wireless Solutions, the SMS printers are connected to a GSM cellular gateway that allows lab results to be wirelessly and securely sent to printers installed at the rural clinics. “There’s very little infrastructure in Africa, most of these clinics cannot be reached by car, have no mail service and no landlines,” said Nick Lidington, managing director, Sequoia Technology. “The challenge was to use the only mode of communication you can reliably say is everywhere in Africa, the cellular network.” “The printer kit and gateway software we developed has received interest from health ministers throughout the continent,” said Lidington. “It can be applied to obtaining lab results for other diseases as well, such as malaria and tuberculosis, so life-saving treatments can begin much sooner.” M2M Technology Preventing HIV Infections Thousands of African Children live TV and radio broadcasts, video streaming, credit card and point-of-sale facilities, commentator feeds, big screen displays and interfaces to Volvo’s own IT Group. Fiber, cellular and other wireless communications technologies were used to make remote connections and ensure network redundancy. The 20 km of fiber in the docks area includes sections microtrenched into the ground as well as marine fiber installed by divers. The company used its GhostBridge Wireless Ethernet Bridges to create point-to-point equipment links across the harbor and to establish internet connectivity at remote locations where wired infrastructure was not feasible. Cellular Wireless Routers were used for failover connectivity. B&B drew from its recently-expanded portfolio of industrial networking products including fiber acquired from IMC and M2M-connecting cellular technology acquired from Conel. ILS Technology and ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corp. (CTC) have partnered to accelerate M2M solutions for the Japan market. Together, the companies will enable corporations to quickly and efficiently integrate connected devices to existing enterprise applications and databases seamlessly, with little or no programming. The two companies are combining their software, services and support capabilities to provide easy access to data from almost any device and enable it to be viewed and analyzed. As a result, their clients will be able to streamline operations, save costs and improve efficiencies. “We’re pleased to partner with CTC to assist companies in Japan in realizing the full potential of M2M technologies to improve their bottom lines,” said Fred Yentz, president and CEO of ILS Technology. “Integrating the ILS Technology deviceWISE software, hosting services and easy back office integration with CTC’s data services, management and support capabilities is a winning formula for any customer.” ILS Technology and ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corp. Partner to Accelerate M2M Adoption Across Japan Cadec Global, Inc. has announced that its PowerVue solution now utilizes Verizon Wireless’ M2M Management Center to deploy and manage devices for its fleet customers with devices on the Verizon Wireless Network. The M2M Management Center enables Cadec to simplify and enhance the process of managing communications between drivers and fleet managers. PowerVue’s M2M Management Center helps the solution verify that devices are connected to the Verizon Wireless network and to monitor whether customers’ devices are operating at peak performance, thus enhancing the exchange of real-time data such as that pertaining to vehicle mileage, workflow, fuel economy and driver performance. Additionally, Cadec can deploy devices on the Verizon Wireless network in as little as one day or less, thus expediting the time in which fleet customers can start monitoring real-time data from their vehicles. “Our deployment of the Verizon Wireless M2M Management Center is another way for Cadec to improve efficiencies for our fleet customers, for which real-time data exchange and communications are critical,” said Jon Bernstein, CEO, Cadec. “Cadec is focused on helping our customers improve fleet performance and enabling them to make the best business decisions in dispatch, logistics and other pertinent facets of their operations.” Cadec Implements Verizon’s M2M Management Center For Fleet Customers B&B Electronics’ European operation provided an extensive, rugged communications network for the Volvo Ocean Race Galway Grand Finale, the nine-day festival built around the final leg of the Volvo Ocean Race in Galway, Ireland. The physical communications infrastructure includes internet access and a ruggedized network used by the race teams, media and Galway event management. Fergal Concannon, the B&B Electronics engineer responsible for the Galway site network during both the 2009 and the 2012 Volvo Ocean Races, said, “It’s the most difficult network project I’ve ever managed in my life.” The network, deployed across 10 event locations including the docks area, event headquarters, media center, Race Village, Global Village and seaside resort of Salthill, supports security, crowd management, web feeds, 14 www.RemoteMagazine.com B&B Electronics Designs Rugged Network for Final Leg of Volvo Ocean Race IRIS International, Inc. is using the ThingWorx connected application platform to build its next-generation remote service management platform.
