Editor's Choice Remote Weather Monitoring Technology for Jobsites Davis Instruments has released the Vantage Connect, a solar-powered cellular solution for monitoring real-time weather conditions. Designed to provide weather data from remote locations, Vantage Connect helps jobsite managers receive microclimate data from any place with cellular coverage that lacks power or a person to monitor the weather. Weather data is uploaded to the web every five, 15 or 60 minutes, and is accessible via smartphone, tablet or PC. The real-time alarms alert supervisors to changing conditions, sending data from jobsites the moment the change occurs. This enables users to identify and manage potential problems, including those resulting from operations involving high air temperatures, high humidity, extreme winds or any other potential unsafe weather scenario. Solar-powered, Vantage Connect does not require an external power source and uses the cellular network to transmit weather data to the Internet. Vantage Connect can be paired with any of Davis' integrated sensor suites or special purpose stations to create a remote, location specific, stand-alone weather station. It also integrates easily with any existing Davis Vantage Pro2 or Vantage Vue weather station. Vantage Connect combines the functionality of a weather station console with an integrated data logger and cellular modem in a self-contained, weather-resistant shelter. Along with mounting hardware, Vantage Connect includes WeatherLink software and a WeatherLink network account. A basic remote weather station, including Vantage Connect and a wireless Vantage Vue Integrated Sensor Suite starts at $945. Current weather stations owners can purchase Vantage Connect for $695. Annual service plans for Vantage Connect start at $119. Red Lion Controls Adds Some Bite to Industrial Automation with Watchdog Relay Red Lion Controls has released the Watchdog relay, a hardware-based solution that reliably monitors and provides fail-safe shutdown of processes controlled by RTUs, PLCs and other automation devices. This industrial automation solution helps to proactively protect unmanned processes on a 24/7 basis. Red Lion's Watchdog relay monitors the pulsing output heartbeat of a connected device to add an extra level of safety that helps protect critical processes across industrial environments that include oil, gas, maritime, power and energy. If the heartbeat stops for reasons that include power surges, extreme weather or device malfunctions, Watchdog's built-in Form C relay will energize and provide a signal that can safely shut down the process. The signal sent upon loss of control helps to avoid costly damage to materials and equipment. Built to operate in extreme conditions, Watchdog Relay supports temperatures ranging from -40°C to 80°C, as well as 5 to 85 percent humidity. It carries Class I, Div II and ATEX hazardous locations certifications, and has been marine and offshore tested and/or verified to meet standards such as ABS, DNV No. 2.4 and Lloyds.
