Patience and time in a decanter will take
this wine from its simple cherry density and
heady barnyard notes toward a brighter tone.
The earthiness develops into green notes of
cilantro, the fruit juicy and soft to the touch. §

2017 Beaune-Grèves 1er Cru Vigne de
L'Enfant Jésus ^ This 9.7-acre monopole at
the center of the Grèves premier cru was the
property of the Carmelite order until church
properties were sold off after the French Revolution. The Bouchard family purchased the
vineyard in 1791 and its wine remains one
of the signatures of the domaine. It's treated
like a grand cru, with 50 percent new oak
in top vintages, and in 2017 the oak and
fruit are finely married, destined to evolve
together for years in bottle. The dark cherry
fruit is intensely floral, girded by gingery
spice in the tannins, tight, juicy and cool. §

all of its supple black cherry and sweet plum
brightness, this lasts on smoky, spicy tannins.
It's powerful, a little syrupy in its ripeness,

Catch this wine young, while its high-toned
raspberry flavors are fresh and beautifully
perfumed with scents of spring flowers.

2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru ^
Frédéric Magnien farms his domaine under
biodynamics, effectively magnifying the
explosive power of his parcels in Charmes,
some of them sustaining centenarian vines.
The soil here is red, a thin layer tinged with
iron over limestone rock. The smoky austerity of that earth seems to infuse this massive
wine, slow to reveal itself, offering, at most,
brisk and savory flavors of fruit skin that
lengthen the wine's tannins with gracious
elegance. Grand and supple, this is a wine to
wait on for a decade or more as its detailed

2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru ^
Floral scents of beeswax spice up this wine's
red-plum and cherry intensity; then it lasts
with a warm red halo. There's some peppery
volatility adding boldness to the flavors, the
texture generous, the tannins completely
saturated with ripe fruit. The domaine owns
0.21 of an acre in Charmes; the wine ages in
new oak barrels and needs long aging in bottle to fully integrate that oak. § Taub Family
