2018 Ribera del Duero (Best Buy) ^ This
beautiful young tempranillo grows at El Quillon, an estate one mile north of the Duero
River and about two miles west of Pesquera
de Duero. The fruit goes through a three-day
cold soak, then ferments in stainless steel,
seeing only four months in old oak barrels.
It's completely focused on the tense, muscular tannins from the grape skins, and the
musky flavors of raspberry and pomegranate
that emanate from those grapes. This is ready
to take on a peppercorn-studded seared duck

the ways in which this wine is black: in its
spark of black rocky soil, in the darkness of its
blueberry-skin tannins, in the layers of anise,

Luscious with black-cherry sweetness, this
captures the ripe 2011 vintage in its sunny

vineyards in La Horra, this is a plump and
massively extracted wine, its heady plum
and strawberry flavors held down by black\
coffee-scented tannins. And yet there's buoyancy to that fruit, rising with air to mesh with
the tannins, brightening the overall impression. Rustic for now, this should gain more

2018 Ribera del Duero Avaniel Tempranillo (Best Buy) ^ Based in Nava de Roa, Monteabellón farms 346 acres in small parcels
surrounding the town. They use their lower
vineyards (at around 2,600 feet), close to the
river, with alluvial pebbles and sand, to produce this young wine. It's a gamey red with
bright rosy scents and a cool line of freshness running through it. A succulent wine,
for something offal-if in Aranda de Duero,
that might be manitas (roasted trotters) or
riñones, kidneys of baby lamb. ¤ Europvin

Duero using a selection from their oldest
vineyards. Its clay-and-limestone soils delivered a supple, superripe 2015, the wine's
heady richness held in focus by the greenpeppercorn spice. Tight and young, this will
be more approachable with five years of age. ¤
