David Schildknecht's coverage
of the wines of Austria and Germany

of wine lovers. The author of the
Austrian and German sections of
The Oxford Companion to Wine's
fourth edition, he is also a regular
contributor to this magazine.
David, whose own home had,
weeks before, been engulfed in
water, writes about the fl ooding
in the Ahr Valley (P. 12).

David Darlington is the author
of fi ve books, among them An
Ideal Wine and Angels' Visits: An
Inquiry into the Mystery of Zinfandel
(later retitled Zin). David
has been posting regular reports
for our website from California's
drought-stricken wine country. In
this issue, he maps out the water
restrictions going into eff ect as

Alissa Bica is a certifi ed sommelier
at 71 Above in downtown Los
Angeles. In addition to serving as
W&S's West Coast tastings coordinator,
she co-owns the home
wine party business, CÔte Brune
and Blonde, and writes the blog
OFFTHEBEATENWINEPATH.COM,
focusing on rare grape varieties
and their optimal food pairs. Bica
reported for this issue on what
the future may hold for sommelier
work (P. 8).

Patrick J. Comiskey
Patrick Comiskey, one of W&S's
US wine critics, has attended his
share of long lunches at the Bien
Nacido facility of Au Bon Climat
and the Lindquist family, including
interview sessions related
to his book American Rhône, in
which Bob Lindquist, then at
Qupé, was a central fi gure. Somehow,
in those interviews with
Lindquist, Jim Clendenen always
had the most to say. Comiskey
helped assemble the oral history
of Clendenen (P. 20).
