A tasting report by Joshua Greene
Back in the 1980s, before everyone had a soil pit on display, one Alexander Valley grower brought a soil scientist to dig a hole in their vineyard, then invited a group of wine writers to take in the results. The scientist explained how the soils had formed, layer upon layer, and how the viticulturist had come to understand why the vines performed differently at different points in their lives. Their roots were exploring one kind of soil, then another as they progressed deeper into the ground.
