The Leading Edge

Dear Friends and Colleagues:
Welcome to The Leading Edge, our flagship publication designed to inform, educate and inspire you on the latest issues affecting the greater-Houston business community. This issue brings you two articles that focus on compliance, one on an international scale and one within your company. First, pKF Texas’ Alison Muecke teamed up with Houston attorney Jack Townsend to author, “Tax consequences of FBAr filings: Understand the rules, process and penalties.” Taxpayers are required to report and pay income, and estate and gift tax, on worldwide income and assets. As a result, the IrS is concerned with anyone who may not correctly file a report of Foreign Bank and Financial Account or FBAr, especially when the accounts are in tax haven jurisdictions where the IrS’ ability to gather information is limited. Allison and Jack have done a good job in describing the outcomes. next up is compliance of a different sort—an article on document retention and recovery policies written by Annabella green and Byron Hebert. Every company, no matter its size, needs a document retention policy and must know how long to maintain documents, whether print or online. Annabella and Byron offer guidance on this very important topic. This issue marks the debut of articles authored by Mark Scimemi, J.D., a senior manager in our State and Local Tax practice. Although, Mark is new to our firm, he brings many years of valuable, hands-on experience to advise clients on sales tax issues. I am sure you’ll benefit from his article, “How companies can benefit from sales tax incentives.” This issue’s Cubester Chat by Dawn Hodges and Jeff Koenig focuses on career development with guidance from veteran pKF Texas voices, Del Walker and raissa Evans. When is a job just a job, and when does a Cubester realize what it takes to have a substantial career? These and other questions are answered in this very thoughtful article.
