Community News Recent achievements of our community edited by JoAnna Haugen AFGHANISTAN Pat Nyhan recently published Zigzag: A Working Woman’s Life in Changing Times, a memoir about how Nyhan fought society’s changing expectations of women to gain a fulfilling working life. She is a former reporter for e Maine Sunday Telegram/Portland Press Herald and Maine Times. Nyhan is also the co-author of Let the Good Times Roll! A Guide to Cajun & Zyedeco Music. She currently teaches adult immigrants in Portland, Maine. BULGARIA Michael Brown (97-99) is now director of the Ecology Action Center in Peoria, Ill. He previously worked as an environmental health sanitarian for the Peoria County Health Department as a sanitarian for environmental health. He is also president of Peoria Wilds, a volunteer group which focuses on ecological restoration of natural areas. Brown also served as manager of the Peoria Park District’s Sommer Park. COLOMBIA Rudolph von Bernuth is emergencies director for Save the Children (U.S.) and has prepared and led the organization’s efforts in the 2004 Asian tsunami, the 2005 Pakistan earthquake, Hurricane Katrina, Iraq and Darfur. Von Bernuth has also worked for CARE, International Council of Voluntary Agencies, USAID’s Advisory Committee on Voluntary Foreign Assistance, the U.N. Department of Humanitarian Affairs (now OCHA) and the Inter-Agency Standing Committee Working Group. David Newman (79-81) recently joined the State University of New York’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry to head its department of forest and natural resources management. He most recently worked at the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources where he served as associate dean of academic affairs. Pat Wand (63-65) has been named to supervise the Center for Teaching and Learning at Zayed University in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. e center provides instructional design, technology and training for faculty at the university. Wand was previously librarian at American University and is a member of the NPCA Board of Directors. University of California-Santa Cruz recently honored Congressman Sam Farr (64-66) for his support of the university’s agroecology programs. Farr has secured more than $3 million to support research and extension projects, including the start-up money for UCSC’s Agroecology Program. He has been an instrumental supporter of sustainable agriculture research and education. Farr authored the 1990 state law that established standards for organic food production and sales in California. COSTA RICA L. Michael Metke (66-68) is the new president of Tyler Junior College in Texas.
