Later McDougall would recognize that this kind of pain wasn’t entirely new. In many ways, it reminded him of his writing process, where obstacles and roadblocks are a daily occurrence, and as a writer he is faced with deciding if the limitations are real or simply a cleverly guised excuse from a weary mind. With miles to go in his race, McDougall was able to apply the same strategy he used to overcome difficult places in his writing: by breaking the process down into small, simple steps. He stopped thinking about the race as being 50 miles. Instead, he thought about the next three miles. And then the next mile. And finally to the next tree. And in doing so, he found himself nearer to the finish. Break-Through McDougall’s newfound stride carried him through the first half of the race. Breaking the challenge into manageable steps had carried him even further. But nearing the end, the writer faced the worst terrain yet. “I hit a stretch of the course that was just abominable.
