Datavideo Marketing Coordinator Valentijn Diemel examines some of the breakthrough
inventions by Datavideo, the future of the market and the future of education...

How
is
your
company
adapting
to
meet
customer demands?
Valentijn Diemel: We are seeing
the budgets of some of the big guys in
the industry shrink fast. Not that they
don't want to invest, there's simply
not enough money to invest. The
amount of projects annually is drying
up and end users are complaining that
learning curves are too steep.
Since
traditional
broadcast
equipment still requires a bit (or a lot)
of training, the amount of costs that
come on top of the initial investment
are huge. That's why we at Datavideo
are focusing on creating smart and
easy to use tools, suitable for a wide
variation of markets.
We see that our remote controlled
switcher, SE-1200, is being used in
traditional broadcasting, like smaller
SNG trucks, but also in training
facilities like medical universities. It's
versatility like that, that is the key to
survive in this business.

InB: What criteria are used to
select products?
VD: Ease of use, versatility, support
and service. Our system integrators
and distributors are looking for
ways to ease their jobs a little. With
our equipment, you only need to go
through a not too steep learning curve
once.
Most of our products explain
themselves, others I can explain to you
in less than half a day.
If you know how to use them, you
know where to place them, and that
can be a lot of places. As I said, our
switchers can be used in a wide
variety of places. But our cameras
are also very flexible in use! Since we
now carry black and white versions of
our PTC-150, you can use them in any
occasion. This camera is mountable
standing up, facing down, on the side,
pretty much any way you like. And
together with the remote controlled
functionality, you can just hook them
up to an existing LAN network to
control them. So, whether you are
using these cameras in a studio, in

a college hall, or in a church, there's
always a suitable application. And
since they are very easy to control, you
don't need to invest loads of time.
Service and support is another facet
of our business that's important for
our customers. Sometimes, a switcher
at US$1500 is about as precious for our
customers as a studio full of hundreds
of thousands of dollars worth of
equipment.
When your equipment breaks,
you just want somebody to take a
look and fix the problem. You don't
want somebody that tells you to
throw it away and buy new stuff.
That's important for us, we can
repair anything, and we're willing to
repair anything. We're proud of our
engineers, they can bring used and
abused equipment back to life on
pretty much any occasion.
InB: Which territories are showing
particular activity?
VD: We're working with colleges
and universities more and more.
Since there's so much activity in the
educational field, more and more
clients know where to find us. In China,
for instance, recording lectures is
something that's becoming popular
quite rapidly. They record lectures,
in front of a green screen, add a
background and some props, add
picture-in-picture clips that help their

lecture and they distribute through
the Internet! Even taking tests and
homework is done online! That way of
teaching - MOOC, Massive Open Online
Courses - is going to be important,
even in Europe. On the other hand, our
equipment is perfect to teach anyone
the basics of broadcast directing. It's
simple to use, and easy to master.
Directing is not very different when
using Datavideo equipment, or a huge
broadcast master control switcher.
InB: Any product innovations
ahead that you can discuss?
VD: Our SE-1200, IP controlled
switcher, is working very well in
different locations. Since the remote
control PC is able to control the
switcher, four PTZ cameras and
a recorder, creating a production
remotely, even at a distance has never
been easier.
The multiviewer, very important for
the one doing the switching, needs
to have as little latency as possible.
That's why we use a streaming
multiviewer that has less than 10
frames delay on a local network!
