Exhibitors jostling to highlight the ever-changing broadcast technology

ABSAT is one of the world's most
unique, large-scale industry trade
events. During its 20 year history,
CABSAT has nurtured vendors who
understand and develop products
for the region. This exhibition
brings broadcast, film, and satellite
together under one roof, alongside
four distinctive symposiums: CABSAT
NABShow Conference, Middle East Post
Production Training Conference, GVF
Satellite Hub Summit, and the Content
Delivery Seminar.
Partnering with NABShow for
the second year, the conference is
focused on "Connecting Live Content
Opportunities", covering the latest
disruptive and convergence trends in
the MEASA markets. Corey Bridges,
one of the original directors who
launched Netflix in the USA, will
open the sessions with a keynote
highlighting his experiences building
one of the most disruptive and
innovative content companies.
More session speakers include Vidya
Nath from Frost & Sullivan Media &
Entertainment, who will dive directly
into what everyone is concerned about,
"The Next Generation Connected
TV". Continuing on, Caroline Frost,
Entertainment Editor of The Huffington
Post UK, will present "The Future
of Broadcast". With media being
fragmented, branding is becoming the
cornerstone of consistency. Coca-Cola
has content everywhere and Mariano
Bosaz, from Coca-Cola, will reveal
details about their 14 digital markets
and millions of YouTube views with
an on-stage interview. Piksel's Neil
Berry will uncover "The Future of
Hyper Personalisation". Sport makes
everyone money. The "Future of
Sports" panel is composed of experts

beyond the game. Jamie MacKinlay,
from PayWizard, will follow this up
delivering a paper aimed at those
looking to scale and monetise their
multi-screen strategies.

director? Confused about compression
in post or need to have a strategy
for web video productions? The
Middle East Post Production Training
Conference features two full days of
top-notch training sessions, designed
for digital media professionals,
that are geared for beginner to
intermediate levels, with 2-5 years'
experience.
With the recent attacks on countless
websites and media companies, cyber
security is on everyone's mind. The
GVF Satellite Hub Summit programme
will include a session to help promote
security awareness within the satellite
industry.
Learn more about Content Delivery
in the dedicated exhibition hall, with
three live discussions on IPTV, OTT,
and online digital platforms, solutions,
and services presented in the Content
Delivery Hub open-air theatre. There
are over 60 exhibitors supporting the
Hub, with live demos on connected
devices.
CABSAT brings together film and
television under one roof and it is,
therefore, a great place to see the
advances in 4K. The industry finally
has products that genuinely work
for both film and video. Vendors
introduced new cameras at NAB and
IBC. CABSAT is the place to see them
up close. Broadcasters need to be
aware that 4K is a film format that
is a little wider than 169, whereas

UHDTV is the169 4K version that
keeps compatibility with HDTV. 4K
cameras can be switched into 169
UHDTV modes for television usage.
By shooting new productions in UHD,
broadcasters are future-proofing their
assets. Besides 4K cameras, CABSAT
highlights UHDTV production tools and
servers, including real-time mixing,
switching, colour correction, and
finishing products. These new products
are scalable from SD, HD right up to 4K
60 p. As for UHDTV distribution, OTT
services are starting up and satellite
demos prove that reasonable costs
can be had with HEVC using DVB-S2X
modulation.
How about all this talk about cordcutting? OTT isn't the only answer.
Will LTE do it alone? Doubtful, without
TV transmitters. One of the newest
transmitters showcased at CABSAT
will be demonstrating an LTE offload
solution. The demo will show how
to offload TV content from mobile
networks onto TV transmitters.
Set-top boxes are changing quickly.
On the show floor you can scrutinise
the HEVC STBs, and also the new
Hybrid Dongle form factor STBs.
Media Asset Management (MAM)
solutions are quickly becoming
a function you cannot operate
without. Whether you are delivering
linear or VOD, asset and broadcast

management solutions are clearly
needed. You may believe only the
large-scale broadcasters can afford
them. Change your thinking - at
CABSAT 2015, you will see several
vendor solutions tailored towards
niche markets, requiring highly
specialised solutions. These will help
you increase your creativity and
improve efficiency of your media
workflows.
IP is ultimately in the future for
all broadcasters. Be sure to ask
lots of questions, as there are two
predominant standards, AVB and
SMPTE 2022, and both are fighting
for top spot. Learn about the pros
and cons of both, as infrastructure
vendors battle on the show floor for
prominence.
And then, take a break from CABSAT
and head over to the Dubai marina on
the new tram. It is the first tramway
outside Europe powered by a groundbased electric supply system. Totally
safe to walk on the third rail as it's only
powered up whilst under the tram!
