independent practice: postsecondary planning (10-40 minutes) OBJECTIVE: STUDENTS WILL DRAFT A POSTSECONDARY PLAN FOR LIFE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL AND REFLECT ON NEXT STEPS. Give students class time to prepare their Postsecondary Plan projects and presentations. If you like, you can give them additional time outside of class to fi nish their work, having presentations take place on another day. Students will fi nd a version of the written project's rubric in their handout that they can use to self-evaluate their work before they present. whole group discussion: presentations (10-20 minutes) OBJECTIVE: STUDENTS WILL PRESENT A POSTSECONDARY PLAN AND GET FEEDBACK FROM THE CLASS. Ask each student to present their fi nal Postsecondary Plan project to the class. Grade their presentation based on the Rubric. Encourage classmates to ask questions of the author during their presentation. Questions to consider include: * What barriers might the presenter face? * What can the presenter do now, in 11th grade, to prepare for a successful postsecondary plan after graduation? summary: taking action on your plan (5-10 minutes) OBJECTIVE: STUDENTS WILL EXPLAIN HOW HAVING A PLAN IS THE FIRST STEP IN TAKING ACTION. After everyone has presented, ask the class: * What overlaps exist between all of our Postsecondary Plan projects? * How might planning ahead now for life after high school help us overcome barriers? * How can we support each other in meeting our goals? Close the unit by having students answer the refl ection. Congratulate students on setting themselves up for future success by creating a postsecondary plan. Creating a plan is just the fi rst step in taking action. Their next step will be to follow through on the plan by making changes in 11th grade that can set them up for future success. Ask the class: How can we take action today by prioritizing our postsecondary goals? How might we speak up for our goals with our friends? Teachers? Family? 58 LESSON 7: POSTSECONDARY PLAN
