UNIT 1: POSTSECONDARY PLAN collaborative activity: college career connection (10-40 minutes) OBJECTIVE: STUDENTS WILL MATCH STUDENT GOALS WITH APPROPRIATE POSTSECONDARY OPTIONS. Let students know that the fi rst step to choosing a postsecondary option is to understand your interests and goals. Once you do, you can research your options and choose the postsecondary path that is best for you. Tell students that today they'll be working in small groups to practice this process by matching a given student profi le to the best postsecondary option. Break students into pairs or groups of three and assign each group a Student Profi le from the " Postecondary Options " handout. Each pair will work as a group or do research online to identify fi ve potential careers for the student and to recommend a postsecondary option for him/her to pursue. whole group discussion: debrief (5-10 minutes) OBJECTIVE: STUDENTS WILL DISCUSS HOW ONE CHOOSES A POSTSECONDARY OPTION. When all groups are fi nished with the activity, call the class back together. Have each group share out their Student Profi le and their recommended option and careers. Then, discuss as a whole class: * Which postsecondary options seemed most appropriate for most students? * What did you fi nd interesting or surprising about the careers you found? * If your student wanted to take action in 11th grade to get ready for the option you recommend, what would you advise him/her to do? independent practice: my postsecondary options (10-20 minutes) OBJECTIVE: STUDENTS WILL REFLECT ON POSTSECONDARY OPTIONS THAT ARE PERSONALLY MEANINGFUL. Have students use what they learned through today's activity and discussion to complete the My Postsecondary Options chart. If there is time leftover, have students respond to the refl ection prompt,or you could assign any or all of these assignments for homework. summary: next steps (5 minutes) OBJECTIVE: STUDENTS WILL REFLECT ON POSTSECONDARY OPTIONS THAT ARE PERSONALLY MEANINGFUL. Summarize today's activities by letting students know that you will all be working together in 11th grade to take action that will prepare them to successfully gain admittance to the postsecondary option of their choice. Reiterate that some form of postsecondary training or education is an expectation for every student in this class. Let students know that you don't expect them to decide on their postsecondary option today. Instead, you want them to see that they do have options, and that their actions today can impact those options in the future. Ask students: How can we take action today to prepare ourselves for life after high school in the postsecondary option we choose? LESSON 3: POSTSECONDARY OPTIONS 21
