LAUNCH GRADE 9: CLEAN SLATE lesson procedure motivation: visualize college (5 minutes) oBjectiVe: StUdEntS Will ConCEptUAliZE WHAt CollEgE liFE iS liKE. tell students to close their eyes and imagine they are in college. Where are they? What does it look like? What are they studying? Are they living in a dorm? Are they living at home? What are their classes like? What do they do for fun? Have the students open their eyes. Acknowledge that the students are still several years away from going to college, and probably don't have the answers to any of those questions yet. distribute three sticky notes to each student. Have the students write one question about what college will be like on each sticky note. Have the students walk their sticky notes to the front of the room and post them on a chart. tell the students that as a class, you have lots of questions about college and the goal of today's lesson will be to answer as many of those questions as possible. direct instruction: set up for college visit (10 minutes) oBjectiVe: StUdEntS Will dEFinE importAnt tErmS For A CollEgE ViSit. Have students look at the college Visit Worksheet. Announce that the class will visit a college - either virtually or in reality - and the assignment is to find the answers to all of the questions on the sheet. read each question and define any terms that are not obvious to students. if your students wrote questions about college life in the motivation section that are not captured on this handout, encourage them to add them at the bottom. independent work: live or virtual college tour oBjectiVe: StUdEntS Will toUr A CollEgE CAmpUS. For live tour - After you have completed the previous sections of this lesson, you are ready to tour a college! many colleges will provide a tour guide and will host an information session out of their admissions office for visiting students. in the computer lab, have students participate in a virtual college campus tour on the college's website or at www.campustours.com.
