unit 1: academic success chain of events Each group should be prepared to share with the class: * Can individuals control a chain of events? * What happens when individuals make different decisions? DIFFERENTIATION SUGGESTION whole group discussion: debrief (5-10 minutes) oBJective: StUDEntS WILL DISCUSS hoW onE ACtIon CAn hAvE An IMPACt on SEvERAL SUBSEQUEnt EvEntS. Ask each group to share out all of the different alternatives they examined for their scenario. Discuss as a whole class: * how can individuals control a chain of events through their decisions? * Do you necessarily have to follow the same path to reach the same result? Is it ever possible to have the same outcome but a different chain of events? * What are some chain of events that cannot be controlled? how can one deal with these sorts of situations? Ask the class: * What if we started with a desired outcome or goal? Could it be possible to use a chain of events to plan ahead? Ask a volunteer to name an outcome they would like to meet today or this week. It can be something simple, such as eating something healthy for lunch or calling a friend when they get home from school. Write the outcome on the board, and then work together as a class to brainstorm some events that could lead to that outcome. independent practice: my chain of events (10-15 minutes) oBJective: StUDEntS WILL CREAtE A ChAIn of EvEntS thAt StARtS toDAY AnD LEADS to A hIGh SChooL GoAL. When students are comfortable with the idea of creating a chain of events for a given outcome, have them look at the " chain of events " handout. tell students to choose one of the statements from their clean slate graphic organizer and write it in the outcome box. Explain that students will now individually create a chain of events that might lead to that outcome. Draw a picture that symbolizes a chain of events so that students understand it visually. As a metaphor, you could also bring in dominoes and show how knocking one domino causes a series of reactions. LESSon 3: ChAIn of EvEntS 23
