- BUILDING FOR GENERATIONS -
While more and more retirement-age homeowners
are opting for single-floor living, not all have the
property space to do so. Fewer still have the luxury
of having the help of a son-in-law who happens to
be an architect. The homeowners in this edition's
cover story had both the property space as well
as inside-the-family design assistance to make it
happen. What's more, the couple had the added
luxury of not having to live through the construction
as they were still residing out of state pending
retirement and the completion of transforming their
recent Lancaster County purchase.
In looking for a reputable Lancaster-area builder, it
was critical for the homeowners to select a company
that was able to work closely with them as well as
their architect. And given that they were still residing
out of state and much of the communication
would be long distance, it was imperative that the
builder have strong communication skills. Careful
listening, creative collaboration, as well as keeping
all parties informed of the project's status would be
essential elements for the project's success.
As you will learn starting on page 28, the homeowners
selected family-owned Duff Builders to take on
the task of adding onto their 18th century farmhouse
to enable comfortable first-floor living. From
their initial meeting, the couple felt strongly that
the Duff team would be a great fit and as you'll hear
from the happy couple, they were right!
Our FEATURE articles in this edition include a very
insightful piece by Hanselman Landscape & Gardens
on things to consider when hiring a garden designer
along with an inspiring review of elements to consider
when remodeling a basement submitted by Pinnacle
Design/Build Remodeling. Both articles offer
great ideas and are accompanied by very beautiful
project photos.
In our Ask ThE ExpERTs column, LanChester Grill &
Hearth informs us of some very exciting fireplace options
for folks looking to enjoy the stunning beauty
of a fire without burning fossil fuels, while Fox Country
Sheds introduces us to amazing new technology
that allows customers to design their own shed in
the comfort of their own home. Not only does the
software allow the customer complete customization
that they can actually see, they can also see
how their shed will look in their own landscape!
In ThE GALLERY we have two very attractive photo
spreads. The first from Quality Design & Drafting,
Svcs., showcases the power of design technology in
assisting homeowners visualize their design decisions.
The second, submitted by Brubaker Inc., is a
beautiful spread of kitchen and bath projects.
