A Message from
Our Executive Director
Does anyone remember what it was like to be a teenager?
What a confusing time it can be. I don't know that it has ever
been easy to be a teen. Our current research shows that it in some ways it may
be harder than ever. There are rising rates of anxiety, depression and thoughts of
suicide. We are trying to understand this better. I think we know that societal
changes during COVID were particularly hard for our kids in grades K-12, teens
included. But these trends were forming prior to that.
My teenage years were formative. I am very thankful to have made it through
to the extent that I did. There were bumps, bruises, close calls, anxiety and fun
times along the way. A big stew of adolescence. All mixed together with an
unrealistic, if developmentally understandable, sense of invincibility.
I originally planned on sharing what I would say to my younger self if I could
travel back in time. Well, I was stumped. I began reminiscing on the good,
the bad and the ugly of those years. But there is a tricky thing about growing
up. Each experience has ripples. Those ripples and how we respond impact the
course and trajectory of our life. There is no substitute for walking through the
trials and tribulations of life, no matter what the age. There is something sacred
in the journey, something to be gained. Perhaps that is the key. Stay teachable
in and from the moment. Does Providence conspire to bring us to key life
moments, where we must utilize what we learned from previous experiences, all
building layer upon layer? As parents and caregivers, when do we begin to " trust
the process " , trust that our children must walk through diffi culty, just as we did?
Otherwise, how will one develop the resilience and grit for the ups and downs of
life? I'm still fi guring this out, in real time. Hopefully, I'll stay teachable.
