SAE STANDARDS NEWS
Help wanted: SAE tech standards committee, task force seeks new members

T

hose familiar with SAE International
know that Standards development is a
huge aspect of the organization's work.
Nearly 26,000 engineers, mostly volunteers, typically contribute to a final standard.
SAE's Technical Standards Development
Program fosters participation in improving product performance and safety. It also promotes
global market acceptance of new technologies,
reduces costs and decreases time to market.
The numbers are impressive. As of February
2021, SAE has published more than 11,000 documents created by more than 400 Technical
Committees, with more than 350 subcommittees and task forces. These documents are revised and maintained through the efforts of
technical committee members, who also prepare, develop, maintain and promote all relevant
Technical Reports within their scope.
Benefits of joining a Tech Committee, subcommittee, or task force include:
* Creating and updating standards that are critical to your industry segment;
* Providing a forum for resolving common issues
faced by the industry;
* Working with other mobility professionals, industry groups, and government regulatory bodies;
* Developing your personal growth/leadership
by becoming a document sponsor or assuming
a committee leadership position;
* Staying updated of current activities in your
industry; and
* Developing key customer and supplier contacts.

Work will involve
developing
guidelines to
minimize the risk
of contamination
and transmission
of infections
during vehicle
servicing and
operation.

Benefits of Standards development (known as
" J-documents " ) to industry and society include:
* Enhance safety
* Create common language
* Facilitate trade through reduced regulations
* Harmonize global markets
* Improve or protect the environment
* Increase productivity of processes
* Permit common interfaces
* Promote uniform testing or performance
* Reduce costs

SAE Cabin Disinfection Practices Committee

SAE currently is actively recruiting technical committee
members to participate in the development of industry-recommended practices related to vehicle cabin disinfection
procedures. Of particular interest are those who have experience working with soft (fabrics, trim, carpet, etc.) and hard
(plastics, vinyl, etc.) materials.
6 March 2021

" While the SAE Cabin Disinfection Practices
Committee is still being formed, we believe its
initial work will involve developing recommended guidelines for service technicians to follow to
minimize the risk of contamination and transmission of infections during vehicle servicing
and operation, " explained Mark Zar, SAE Ground
Vehicle Standards specialist.
This committee will develop procedures to
benefit the industry and consumer safety. It also
will consider the characteristics of different materials used in vehicle cabins in developing these
processes. Those working at motor-vehicle
OEMs, component and materials suppliers and
others are welcome to participate.

SAE Active Safety ADAS Sensor
Calibration Task Force

SAE International is actively recruiting technical
committee members for development of industry
standards related to ADAS sensor field calibration
procedures. " We are particularly interested in
recruiting members from the user and producer
categories who have experience and expertise
in ADAS sensor development, integration or
ADAS sensor field calibration procedure development, " Zar said.
Established to support advanced vehicle safety system methodologies, this new task force
will report to the SAE Active Safety Committee.
Its goal is to develop overall improvements to
existing ADAS sensor field-calibration procedures, aiming to benefit the vehicle repair/aftersales sector.
The new ADAS sensor field calibration procedures will
uphold high standards for accuracy and precision, and consumer safety. Each sensor system related to ADAS has
unique challenges and will need to be addressed individually to achieve overall goals. Individuals at OEMs, vehicle
repair companies, sensor suppliers, research, and testing
facilities are welcome to participate in developing these
important standards.
The task force meets through Webex conference calls to allow
remote participation. A date and time for the Active Safety ADAS
Sensor Calibration Task Force's meeting in March had not been
determined at presstime. For the latest updates, check the
Automotive Technical Committee Meeting Schedule at: https://

Please contact Mark Zar (mark.zar@sae.org) if you are interested in joining SAE International's important work of developing ground-vehicle standards and advancing automotive
technologies, or for more information.
