BAJA VALIDATION EVENT - ARIZONA
At the Baja Validation Event in Arizona, Rochester Institute of
Technology's Baja SAE team, which goes by the name RIOT
Racing, compiled the most points over the five events to win
the overall title at MC Motorsports Park in Tucson. Harding
University's team won the Endurance Event and placed fourth
overall.
" Planning was even more important, especially with having
room capacity limits and regulations to follow, " said Jenna
Rosser, RIOT Racing secretary and member of the executive
board. " We worked to transition most of our fall design
season to be conducted virtually over Zoom, which was a
large change for the team but, as usual, the members stepped
up and got the work done even given the restrictions
present. "
During spring semester, the team scheduled work times in
the machine shop to build and test the car. The design and
sales presentation were hosted virtually in early spring,
allowing the group to focus on is first competition.
In addition to its Arizona victory, RIOT Racing placed
second overall at the Baja Validation Louisville Event and first
overall in the Knowledge Event.
For Texas A&M BAJA, " Our team needed to utilize an offthe-shelf
powertrain because we didn't have the capacity to
create a competitive one by ourselves, " said the team's project
manager, Randall Schank. " So what vehicles have similar
power and weight restrictions to Baja cars? Motorcycles!
Rather than copy and paste the CVT-gearbox like everyone
else, we took advantage of the gearbox system that small
dirtbike manufacturers have produced for decades by
incorporating a manual transmission into our vehicle. We
removed the piston and head assembly and inputted power
through our crankshaft directly from the Briggs and Stratton
engine. This system gave the driver superior control over the
vehicle, ensuring that we would never lose low-end torque
from a CVT belt slipping. In addition, running a manual
transmission allowed us to spend our valuable testing time
making the car as reliable as possible rather than tuning a
CVT. "
Placing third overall behind Texas A&M and Virginia Tech
was the team from Oregon State University, a perennial Baja
SAE power that usually competes in two of the average year's
three competitions. This year, they did so only at the one in
Arizona, placing third overall and first in the Maneuverability
Event.
BAJA VALIDATION EVENT - LOUISVILLE
The University of Michigan team, called Michigan Baja Racing,
took first place overall in the competition at the University of
Louisville's Drop Forge Proving Grounds-surprisingly, without
a top-two performance in any of the events.
" One of the aspects of our vehicle that facilitated a good
performance at competition was the implementation of our
4WD system with our vehicle, " said Hector Clarke team
captain Michigan Baja Racing from the University of
