AUTODRIVE
CHALLENGE
AUTODRIVE CHALLENGE, A JOINT EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
of General Motors and SAE International, wrapped up its fouryear
run in 2021 on the highly instrumented streets of Mcity in
Michigan. Unfortunately, three teams were unable to
participate on those proving-ground streets because of COVID
19. Among the teams missing was the overall winner in each of
the three preceding competitions, the University of Toronto.
Anticipating COVID 19 restrictions, organizers ran the event
as a hybrid affair, with separate dynamic and static
competitions. All teams participated in the static competition,
which essentially involved teams describing their thinking in
retrofitting a Chevrolet Bolt to run autonomously in a safe and
socially responsible way.
The team from the University of Toronto was overall winner
in the static competition. Winning the dynamic competition at
Mcity was the team from Texas A&M University.
" It has been my absolute pleasure to be involved over the
past four years with the AutoDrive Challenge series 1
Competition, " said Allison Hostetler, Director of PreProfessional
Programs at SAE International. " AutoDrive
Challenge has given student teams the ability to build their
automated learning skills through a series of validation
methods over the course of the program. These student
participants are workforce-ready to take on the changing
mobility landscape and thrive. SAE International would like to
thank our partner, General Motors, for their continued
contribution and commitment to STEM education and building
the next generation of mobility engineers. Along with General
Motors, we also had excellent industry support from
companies like Intel and MathWorks, which created
multifaceted learning opportunities for participants in the

The Virginia Tech car navigates around barrels on
