PRODUCT GUIDE
PROPULSION
Motor and inverter series
Dana Inc.'s (Maumee, Ohio) expanded
family of Dana TM4 SUMO HP electric
motors and inverters, includes the
HV1000 and HV2500. The TM4 SUMO
family is specifically designed for battery-electric,
range-extended, and fuelcell
vehicles. These high-performance
motors and
inverters are
engineered to
offer maximum
flexibility,
enabling
direct-drive,
series-hybrid,
or parallel-hybrid applications. The
product is designed to allow OEMs to
replace internal combustion-based
components with a compact, highly
efficient package that does not require
major modifications. It can therefore be
coupled to diesel engines, natural gas
engines, and multi-speed transmissions,
as well as integrated as part of an eAxle
in heavy-duty and off-highway
applications. Reaching up to 800 volts
DC, the series offers up to 430 kW of
continuous power and 540 kW of peak
power, as well as a peak torque value of
2,500 Nm.

Electric oil pump
Concentric AB (Skånes Fagerhult,
Sweden) has partnered with a global
Tier 1 manufacturer of fully automatic
transmissions for medium- and heavyduty
commercial vehicles to develop a
new fully electric oil pump for use within
their " start/stop " technology. Production
will start in 2022. Advanced " start/stop "
technology will be offered as an option
across their entire range of transmissions
and will enable a reduction in CO2
emissions
of up to 6% in urban applications,
says Concentric. The new pump also
uses Concentric
AB's wet rotor design
concept that
eliminates the possibility
of a dynamic
seal failure. The de40

sign enables proper thermal management
for the pump unit throughout its
entire operation ensuring longer highperformance
duty cycles. The low noise
e-pump is ultra-compact due to its high
power density and liquid-cooled electronics
that make packaging easier.

Industrial diesel engines
Yanmar (Osaka, Japan) developed two
models of high-powered industrial diesel
engines (3TN86CHT/4TN86CHT)
that comply with EU Stage V and U.S.
EPA/CARB Tier 4 emission regulations.
The newly developed clean 1.6L/2.1L
engine pursues even higher power
density by integrating the latest diesel
engine technology born from Yanmar's
engine development
experience. In addition
to complying
with strict emission
regulations, the new
engine is compact,
allowing it to easily
be fitted to customers' machinery and
has lower fuel consumption and noise.
The new models offer advantages like
high power density in which a new turbocharger
matching design has been
implemented to increase power output,
along with higher strength in various
engine parts as well as compact
engine configuration and proprietary
exhaust gas aftertreatment system to
offer operators seamless working in
the field.

Magnet-free electric motor
Mahle (Stuttgart, Germany) is currently
developing a new kind of magnet-free
electric motor that does not require
rare earth elements. This not only
makes production more environmentally
compatible, but also brings advantages
in terms of costs and resource
security. The central feature of the new
motor is the inductive and thus contactless
power transmission, which allows
the motor to operate
wear-free and
particularly efficiently
at high
speeds. According
to Mahle, the efficiency
is above 95% at almost all operating
points. Mahle has combined the
strengths of its various electric motor
concepts in one product. This new development
is scalable, so it can be used
in anything from subcompacts through
commercial vehicles. The motor is highly
efficient-at almost all operating
points-and demonstrates these advantages
in segments where vehicles are
mostly operated in real road traffic.

Integrated exhaust thermal
management system
Through a joint development agreement,
Eaton's Vehicle Group (Eden
Prairie, Minn.) and Tenneco's (Lake
Forest, Ill.) Clean Air business group will
produce an integrated exhaust thermal
management system that will enable
commercial truck and light vehicle manufacturers
to meet upcoming emissions
regulations. Under agreement terms,
Tenneco's Cold Start Thermal Unit
(CSTU) will be combined with Eaton's
TVS blower technology. The integrated
exhaust thermal management system
will provide heat directly to the vehicle's
aftertreatment system, which is
essential for reducing
harmful
exhaust emissions.
Upon heating
the SCR catalyst
to approximately
200-250°C (392-482°F), the
aftertreatment system can efficiently
convert NOx into clean emissions (e.g.,
nitrogen and water particles) upon exiting
the SCR catalyst. Eaton's electrically
driven TVS Roots blower allows the airflow
to be efficiently and precisely controlled
so the CSTU can maintain optimal
aftertreatment temperatures.
