While the panelists readily admitted there are drawbacks to
working remotely, such as the lost opportunities for co-workers
to discuss problems in person, there are ways to connect
with others. Nielsen has made business connections without
traveling by plane. " I've criss-crossed the country six times in
300 days, " Nielsen said about his roadway excursions via motorhome.
He added, " We've been trying to use the pandemic
to re-establish how we deal with customers and dealers. "
Said Tsien, " As we emerge from the pandemic, hopefully
in the very near future, I do believe we're going to be looking
at new patterns of work. It's going to be more flexible.
There are going to be more opportunities for people to
spend a little bit more time working from home. But clearly
there is a need for interaction. "

Commercial vehicle sensors pose
unique challenges
Sensors are the frontline technology for today's advanced driver
assistance systems (ADAS) and tomorrow's autonomous vehicles.
Designers at all levels are working to find the optimal number
of sensors and their best performance levels, capturing data
that's farther away while increasing field of view and resolution.
Tier 1s and OEMs are leveraging different sensors - radar,
cameras and lidar - to provide redundancy and gain insight
into what's around the vehicle. Some of the first autonomous
vehicles will be heavily laden with sensors as vehicle designers
strive to prove that driverless vehicles can navigate safely. Taxis
and shuttles are being loaded with input devices.
" When we look at [SAE] Level 4-5 robotaxis, ultimately they'll
be at 30 or more, " said Andy Whydell, vice president of systems
product planning for ZF. " Some of the challenging situations are
slow movement when you're maneuvering the vehicle. "
Commercial vehicles share many of the same challenges as
passenger cars, but they also have additional requirements.
Reliability and longevity demands increase, and operating
conditions in agriculture and construction are vastly different.
