For the past 25 years,
Mike O'Neil has worked
for smaller companies in
the automotive racing
industry, primarily with brake and
clutch systems. Using the term 'smaller'
is important " because it means that I
seldom have a team of engineers within
the company for support on the
technical items, " he said.  " Often, it is
just me. However, successful projects
do require collaboration with technical
people in other companies (including
race teams) and with people in sales,
production, marketing, outside
suppliers, and other areas.  It takes
input from people in all of these areas
to introduce the best product for a
fairly wide market or for an individual
customer, whatever the case may be.
Working with these other departments
and understanding their needs and
capabilities has made me a better
engineer. It has allowed me to see the
bigger picture and allowed our
company to introduce effective
products with short development
cycles with acceptable profit margins. "
O'Neil is a motorcycle racer and
Formula SAE judge, concentrating on
the training of new judges. n
