DOSSIER: Joan Wills of Cummins
One of SAE International's newest Board Directors
has achieved great success for herself as an engineer
and a leader. But Joan Wills isn't the stereotypical
corporate climber. She's more about plowing a wider
path so there is more space for others, especially
engineers in under-represented populations, to
navigate a successful career.
" One of the things I'm most proud of is helping
others advance their careers, " the Cummins Executive
Director of Electronics told Update. " When I hire or
promote people, it's into roles where I think they can
have a significant impact. "
" I have a passion for putting together diverse
teams, " elaborated Wills, who leads a team of over
600 engineers in the U.S., India, and China in the
development of electronics, sensors, engineering
tools, and software for Cummins products and
customers. " I'm co-lead for our U.S. Technical
initiative on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). We
