DOSSIER: Becky Mueller of IIHS
Biomechanics of Injury (IRCOBI)
for significant advancement in
traffic safety. Her research has
produced many international
technical peer-reviewed journal
conference publications,
presentations, and interviews
with national and local media
outlets.
Mueller serves on the Board of
Directors for the SAE
Washington DC Section, holds a
membership on the IRCOBI
scientific review committee, and
serves as vice chair of the
technical committee for the Ohio
State Injury Biomechanics
Symposium.
What is the most interesting
activity that you are engaged in
at the moment?
Currently, I am the technical lead
for upgrading the IIHS side
impact car crash test. The most
unique challenge was
redesigning the aluminum
honeycomb barrier face to
represent modern SUVs. IIHS
was able to collaborate with
Cellbond, experts in aluminum
honeycomb barriers, to quickly
develop a multi-stiffness barrier
design. Luck was on our side,
our final research tests
concluded just weeks before the

A Swedish-car enthusiast, she's owned two SAABs and three Volvos over
the past 20 years. Her current drive is a red 2011 Volvo C70 convertible.
2020 COVID shutdown and we were able to launch
the program in May 2020. This is not my first crash
test program launch, but this is the first time I've
launched a program from home during a shutdown!
What past activity, accomplishment, or memory
gives you the most satisfaction?
A few months into the 2020 COVID pandemic, I had
the idea for a fun at-home project to create a Lego
model of the IIHS car crash test facility and do a
stop-motion video capturing the entire crash test
process. I designed and assembled the 1,500-piece
