SAE member rises to the challenge
for first-graders in Arizona
Don Robins is used to challenges. As a
design engineer, he had to produce parts
overnight and have them ready to install
into cars and trucks being tested at the
General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford,
Michigan. When COVID-19 eliminated inperson
volunteering to support SAE's A
World In Motion (AWIM) Rolling Things
Challenge at Auxier Elementary School
near Chandler, Arizona, Don immediately
stepped up along with two other GM
alumni to help the students-serving in the
AWIM virtual STEM volunteer program.
Instead of being in the classroom and
working with small groups of students
individually, the volunteers needed to find a
way to navigate interacting with all 16
students at once via a Google Meet. When
the camera placement made it difficult to
see what was happening with testing, they
quickly moved things around so they'd be
ready for the next class. Because they

couldn't ask more pointed questions to
smaller groups as they would normally do
pre-pandemic, they instead modified their
open-ended questions so they would apply
to the entire class and encourage more
student participation.
Although there were a few challenges
with being remote, the experience for
Robins was just as impactful as being in the
classroom. " You could tell right away how
much the students appreciated having
volunteers take part in the program. They
already knew our names and would ask us
questions. Even though we were remote,
they made us feel like we were still part of
the program. "
Volunteers are an important part of the
AWIM PreK-8 STEM curriculum. They help
bring each STEM challenge to life by linking
the curriculum to practical, real-world
applications. When Don talks about the
