6. Part Testing on Build Plate - In some
cases, there are quick tests that can
be incorporated into the build file to
verify part quality, such pressure
testing with a soap bubble test and 3D
printed quick disconnects.
7. Tooling or Build Plate and Support
Removal - The objective of this is to
have the parts best positioned for
subsequent processing. It should be
noted that some of the newer surface
smoothing operations can also
remove supports, saving time and
cost. In this case, the build design
would need to accommodate good
access, as well as making sure the
surfaces still attached to the build
plate can be finished in a later
operation, if needed.
8. Dimensional Check with 3D
Scanning - This is an optional step to
verify there are no gross dimensional
issues with the parts, including
distortion or quality issues that occur
during build plate removal. Identifying
these early on helps eliminate adding
cost to scrapped parts.
9. Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) and Heat
Treatment - While some ultra-hard
alloys may require some heat
treatment after all machining
operations, in most alloys it is
