distortion during heat
treatment from spoiling hightolerance
dimensions. In the
case where many small parts
are on a single build plate, it
may be preferred to perform
this prior to build plate
removal to simplify keeping
the parts together. In the case
of larger parts, especially
where heat treatment requires
a liquid quench (e.g.,
precipitation hardened
aluminum alloys), heat
treatment while the part is
attached to the build plate can
interfere with good flow of the
quenchant or differential
shrinkage between the thin
part and thick build plate can
result in residual stresses or
distortion.
10. Lot Acceptance Testing -
Once all the thermal
processing that influences
material properties is
complete, lot acceptance
coupons (tensile, fatigue,
hardness, chemistry,
microstructure) can generally
be sent off to the test lab for
lot acceptance testing.

for high strength steels that
