DOSSIER: Mike O'Neil of
Essex Parts Services, Inc.
Some people are fortunate
enough to turn their hobby into
their career. Mike O'Neil did just
that.
Raised in a family of
motorcycle racers, he learned to
work on the machines and
developed a deep competitive
spirit at a young age. It was
always about improving, whether
it be the machine or his skills.
He pursued a few different
paths while earning his BSME in
1992 and MSME in 1995 from The
University of Akron. Like many
students in SAE, he was heavily
involved with a Formula SAE
team. However, he also took an
interest in the university
newspaper, starting out as a
photographer and working his
way up to editor-in-chief with a
staff of 50, the only engineering
student ever to hold that
position at Akron.
" You would not think that the
newspaper experience would be
relevant for an engineer, " he told
Update. " But, the photography
and graphics work developed a
better eye for creating designs
that are visually appealing as
well as functional and the writing

improved my abilities to communicate and sell my
ideas. Those are two skills that receive little attention
in engineering school that made me a much more
successful engineer. "
He worked his way through college as a mechanic
until he took co-op positions with Lord Corporation
and then GE. As a graduate student he mentored the
FSAE team as well as performing his thesis research
and test work on tires.
For 14 years he was the Technical Director for Tilton
Engineering, a company that designs, manufactures,
and sells clutch and brake systems for racecars.
" Nothing like being thrown into the deep end. On
day three I was moved from " engineer " to being in
charge of Engineering, " said O'Neil.
For the past 11 years, he has been the Technical
Director at Essex Parts Services, Inc., a company that
specializes in high performance and racing brake
systems.
