When the on-the-snow dynamics portion of
the 2021 SAE Clean Snowmobile Challenge
fell into jeopardy because of the pandemic,
six-year SAE member Mark Boeckmann and
a few other volunteers stepped up to
organize a 100% virtual competition
including virtual dynamic events using 1D
Modeling.
" When 2021 was decided to be virtual, a
group of us with competition and simulation
experience jumped in to try and get a
competition to work in that environment, "
he told Update.
After competing in the competition as a
student from 2014-2017, and after being
hired by Polaris, " I volunteered to help judge
and run events and became active in trying
to keep the competition rules contemporary
and relevant, " he added.
This year marked the fourth year that
Boeckmann, powertrain development
engineer at Polaris, has volunteered at the
Snowmobile Challenge, and he's looking to
volunteer for the Formula SAE competition
in the future as well. For the 2021
Snowmobile Challenge, he and the " few
other volunteers " shared the title of event
coordinator after long-time coordinator Jay
Meldrum of Michigan Tech greatly reduced
his participation.

diversity. We hope to continue to grow in
this fashion for years to come, " he said.
Outside of the Snowmobile Challenge,
Boeckmann represents Polaris in the SAE
Minnesota Section. He also served the
interests of SAE in yet another way by cohosting
the January 28-29 Virtual Mentor
Mixer on Stress Management in SAE's
Member Connection. n
