COMPETITION
Upon arriving at Michigan International
Speedway, the team was able to experience
both the good and the bad of Formula SAE,
including not being able to go completely
through tech for the first time until just before
noon on Day 3 - as opposed to the original
scheduled plan of Day 2.
Through the course of technical inspection,

three main issues were identified: the headrest
foam was not rules compliant, the jacking point
was 270mm (not 300mm) wide, and many
critical fasteners were not safety wired
(positively restrained). The team learned key
lessons from each of these problems. First, if
using parts from a previous car, ensure the rules
regarding that item have not changed. As was
the case with the headrest foam, the rules have
changed this year to only accept two new types
of foam, which the team's was neither. Second,
when a rule specifies a size, location, or
anything specific, they mean exactly what they
say. 270mm is not 300mm, even if the
produced part serves the intended function.
Lastly, make sure all critical fasteners are
positively retained. Nylock nuts are easiest in
