At the awards ceremony, Marty Gordon of
RIT talked about a unique award. " The Mike
Schmidt Award honors Mike Schimdt,
obviously, " he said. " He, along with Jason
Rounds [current Baja SAE organizer], was a
founding member of the resurrected RIT team.
Mike was the greatest guy in the world. He
would do anything for you. He had great hopes
and dreams. He wanted to go to all three North
American Baja SAE events. This award is
presented to the team that performs the best
at the combined three events that we hold
every year. "
" This is a very meaningful award, " Gordon
continued. " It represents hard work,
perseverance, and standing behind one another.
Unfortunately, on spring break of his senior
year, Mike died in a fatal car accident. "
