Material and process development

In many cases, the goal is to develop material
allowables that will be published publicly in the
Metallic Materials Properties Development and
Standardization (MMPDS) Handbook for metals, or in
Composite Materials Handbook-17 (CMH-17) for
polymers. These mechanical-properties curves form
the basis for the design allowables to ensure
sufficient margins-of-safety for the aerostructure,
engine, and various mechanical systems. This then
underwrites the airworthiness of the aircraft.
With the advent of space tourism, there has been
interest in at least two other alloys used in extremely
high-temperature applications: copper alloys (e.g.
CuCrNb, CuCrZn) and niobium alloys (e.g. NASA's
C-103). These alloys are very expensive, and in some
cases, introduce environmental concerns. For
example, chromium is viewed as hazardous in Europe.
In summary, the AM industry will continue to evolve
quickly. Adoption, although, will likely be buffeted in
aerospace relative to other industries due to its
stringent safety requirements. Standards will help to
promote adoption. The immediate effort is focused
on reducing uncertainty during the build process. Part
of the solution includes being more transparent with
the printing process itself - provincially speaking, this
is providing not only the list of ingredients but also
the unique recipe.
SAE is working on making more public various
process control documents (PCD), which will help
further demystify additive manufacturing. Together
with industry, researchers, and regulators, the
organization is disseminating consensus-derived
documents to further reduce barriers to adoption.
Many look forward to the day when additive
manufacturing is considered just another tool in the
toolbox...n
