TECH FOCUS:
AUTOMATED VEHICLES

limits: high speeds, high
acceleration, low computation
times - and with everything
done fully autonomously.
Demonstrating high-speed
autonomous racing can be
considered an immense
challenge for self-driving cars,
and progress in this area has the
potential to enable
breakthroughs in agile and safe
autonomy.
To succeed at racing, an
autonomous vehicle is required
to perform both precise steering
and throttle maneuvers in a
physically complex, multi-agent,
uncertain environment. This
makes racing an interesting
opportunity to explore the
physical and algorithmic limits of
autonomous driving.

Daniel Watzenig is one of the two editors-in-chief of the SAE Journal of Connected and Automated Vehicles. He and Johannes
Betz are co-editors of that journal's upcoming special issue, " Autonomy and Connectivity at the Edge - Autonomous Racing. "
Johannes Betz earned both a B. Eng. and
a M. Sc. in the field of automotive
engineering. After he completed his
Ph.D. at the Technical University of
Munich (TUM), Betz was postdoctoral
researcher at the university's Institute of
Automotive Technology, where he
founded the TUM Autonomous
Motorsport Team. He currently is a
postdoctoral researcher at the University
of Pennsylvania working at the xLab for
Safe Autonomous Systems.
UPDATE
Since 2017, Daniel Watzenig has been a
full professor of automated driving at the
Institute of Automation and Control, Graz
University of Technology. In addition, he
is divisional director and scientific head
of the Automotive Electronics and
Software Department of the Virtual
Vehicle Research Center in Graz. Since
2015, he has been the vice president of
the ARTEMIS Industry Association
(European Research Association on
Embedded Control Systems).

" Formula Student Driverless " field offers Formula
Student teams (university teams only) from all over
the world an opportunity to develop algorithms for
their autonomous racecars. Formula Student decided
to make participation in at least one autonomous
competition an obligation for all the teams -
regardless of their vehicle's competition in the normal
