SAE international Performs First Test of
EV Charging Public Key infrastructure Design

Longtime SAE member electrifies national lab
To conduct proper testing for a
mobility-related engineering
project, it's always best to have
an SAE member at the helm.
For the National Renewable
Energy Lab's role in the SAE
Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging
Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)
project, Tony Markel is that SAE
member. His official title is
Senior Researcher, Partnership
Development, Cybersecurity
Evaluation and Applications
Group.
" I basically find subject matter
experts within NREL to provide
technical expertise to the
project, and then work through
all the logistics - in this case,
bringing everybody on site and
hosting them in a testing event.
It kind of pushes things along
that way, " he said.
Markel also arranged for the

" For me, the reason this project is important is that it brings
together a quality stakeholder group that is really focused on
a specific problem. And this one getting a key public
infrastructure setup for EV charging. I think really defines the
system of secure 'handshakes' that I think our whole EV
ecosystem is going to benefit from, " Markel told Update.
The 24-year SAE member is a frequent tech paper
presenter and attendee at SAE conferences and events. He
also serves on SAE task forces and has volunteered at SAE
Collegiate Design Series competitions. n
